A village within a city
Though often referred to as the northern part of Concord, Penacook has its own zip code and identity separate from the capital city. “It’s a distinct little village with a lot of nice neighborhoods, apartments and smaller homes for newer families,” says Connie Mullen, broker and owner of Mullen Realty Group. Mullen has sold homes in the area since 2010 and says, “It has improved greatly in recent years, as more families have settled down here for its lower home prices.” Penacook has its own elementary school and zones for Merrimack Valley Public Schools instead of Concord’s district, as well. “The schools are really important here, making the community of families very supportive,” Mullen says. Penacook residents can enjoy a well-maintained park system and two major rivers in their back yards, or they can hop on Route 3, a straight shot into downtown Concord, just 6 miles south.

Two rivers, trails and Rolfe Park
Penacook’s main outdoor gathering space, Rolfe Park, lies off Community Drive, adjacent to the middle and high schools. The park features a playground, baseball diamond, pickleball courts and a pool. Locals can also catch a concert or attend a story time in the park during the warmer months. Both the Merrimack and Contoocook rivers flow through the neighborhood, allowing for rafting, fishing and swimming. The Contoocook Park offers trails that wind through dense birch and hemlock forests, where visitors can snowshoe and cross-country ski in the winter. When the temperature warms up, folks can trade in their skis for hiking boots and cool off in the river after trekking the one-to-two-hour loop.
