Concord offers privacy 14 miles from Lynchburg
Concord is 14 miles from downtown Lynchburg and draws residents with its proximity to education and major employers. “It’s the colleges in the Lynchburg area that pull people to the Concord area,” says Michelle Ford, a Realtor with Century 21 who has been working in the industry for 11 years. She also mentions that Framatome, an international nuclear energy firm, is a large area employer and has a testing and service center 8 miles away. Residents here can live in a quiet, country setting but still be close to Lynchburg, Appomattox and Rustburg using U.S. Route 460, also called Richmond Highway. “People want a little bit of privacy; they don’t want to be right on each other,” says Ford.
Cape Cods and ranch-style homes on large lots
Most of the area's homes are Cape Cod and ranch-style set back from the road with long driveways and large lots. “When you get out in the county, the acreage for lots, the minimum is much bigger than in the city,” says Ford. “Most everything that’s going to be in the Concord area is also going to be on well and septic.” Prices range from $220,000 to $400,000.
Campbell County Public Schools, career and technical education
Campbell County Public Schools, which earns a B from Niche, serves the area. Children can attend Concord Elementary, which gets a B. Students continue to Rustburg Middle, which also receives a B, and Rustburg High, which earns a B-minus. The high school offers career and technical education courses in agriculture, business, construction and technical drawing.
Focus on the great outdoors
Paradise Lake Family Campground, about 3 miles away, is open year-round and has seasonal amenities including a pool, game room, walking trails, a playground, basketball court and a campfire area. It's also pet-friendly and has laundry facilities. Balance Gymnastics & Fitness offers lessons for kids and can be rented for birthday parties. There are also a lot of historic sites around the area, including in neighboring Appomattox, where the Civil War ended. Otherwise, residents head to other areas for recreation, including Percival’s Island Natural Area along the James River in downtown Lynchburg. The RiverWalk trail connects to the island, and visitors may bike and hike through the area. Fishing on the island is permitted, and many enjoy its scenic views. The Lynchburg Trail system winds its way throughout Lynchburg for more hiking and biking.
Lynchburg Community Market, Rustburg's library
The Lynchburg Community Market is held outdoors on the corner of 12th and Main streets in downtown Lynchburg, 14 miles away. It has operated since 1783 and runs every Saturday. There is also an Artisan Crafters Gallery, Tuesday through Saturday. The Campbell County Library in Rustburg, 9 miles away, holds weekly arts and crafts sessions and story times.
Convenience shopping, wine tasting close to home
Several convenience stores, including a Sheetz and a Dollar General, are along Richmond Highway. The DeVault Family Vineyards, along Station Lane, offers wine tasting on Fridays and Saturdays. The vineyard also has a pool, volleyball and basketball courts and a fishing pond. The facility is often used as an events venue.
Ford says residents here often go to Lynchburg, Appomattox or Rustburg for shopping and dining. Richmond Highway in Appomattox, 9 miles west, is lined with strip malls, chain restaurants and national retailers like Walmart. The Shoppes of Appomattox Shopping Center has a Kroger. Rustburg, 9 miles east, offers a few eateries near the Village Highway and has a Food Lion. Downtown Lynchburg has upscale restaurants lining Main Street and Commerce Street, such as Inka Grill for Peruvian cuisine and My Dog Duke’s Diner, a popular brunch spot.
Commuters use Richmond Highway
Richmond Highway leads to Appomattox in 9 miles, then on to Lynchburg. State Route 24 leads 9 miles to Rustburg. Centra Lynchburg General Hospital is 13 miles away, and the Lynchburg Regional Airport is 15 miles away and has daily flights to Charlotte. Houses of worship such as Bethlehem United Methodist Church and Calvary Baptist are along Village Highway in Concord.
