Cultural and creative events in downtown Johnstown
Conemaugh Township, 4 miles from Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, is a primarily residential area with large swaths of green spaces. Although downtown is a 9-minute drive from the area, it feels separate, but not isolated, from the urban center. Johnstown has events or celebrations almost daily, from cryptid festivals to concert series. “We have a very robust events calendar,” says Lisa Rager, the Executive Director of Visit Johnstown, where residents can see events happening in and around the city. “There is so much going on here. There is a lot to do regarding music, cultural festivals and tournaments.” Performances, art classes, and mindfulness workshops are offered at the Cambria County Community Arts Center, which aims to share art and art appreciation in Cambria County, especially in the county’s rural locations.

Cryptid merchandise at Squonkapalooza
“Cambria City Ethnic Fest is held in Cambria City, part of Johnstown,” says Rager. “And the emerging cultural district of the area. It celebrates the ethnic heritage of the area, and it’s also a huge homecoming for the area; lots of people come that weekend to see old friends and family members.” The festival offers traditional dance performances, live bands and food from several different countries, including Ireland, Poland and Ukraine. Scary story and local legend enthusiasts stop by Squonkapalooza, a cryptid festival in August that celebrates Pennsylvania’s crying creature, the Squonk. Tales of the Squonk, a beast with ill-fitting, warty skin and a penchant for sobbing, were first told in William T. Cox’s Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, the critter’s popularity took off from there and is now a local folktale. Squonk appreciators may buy Squonk shirts, prints and other merchandise in Central Park.
At the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, residents may watch local plays, musicals, murder mystery dinner theatres, and other performing art shows. Locals may also participate in acting classes. Religious services are held at St. Gregory Catholic Church, Locust Grove Church of the Brethren and St. John Gualbert Cathedral.

Arts program at Conemaugh Valley High School
The area is served by Conemaugh Valley School District, which receives a C-plus from Niche. Children may attend Conemaugh Valley Elementary School, which receives a B-minus, for prekindergarten through sixth grade and Conemaugh Valley High School, which receives a C-plus, for seventh through 12th grade. Conemaugh Valley High School has an arts program and students may participate in band and color guard.
Commuters use the Johnstown Expressway
The area is car-dependent and has no sidewalks or public transportation. The nearest highway is the Johnstown Expressway. The Amtrak station in downtown takes commuters to New York and Pittsburgh. The John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport is 2 miles from Conemaugh, though noise levels seem to be fine unless homes are nearby. The airport uses United Express and flies daily to Washington DC and Chicago.
The Johnstown Expressway runs north from Johnstown to Homer City.

Dining along Franktown Road and in downtown
Along Frankstown Road, The Johnstown Inn serves bar and diner food in a homely setting. The eatery offers outdoor seating for sunny days and live music. At Coney Island Lunch, servers can be seen lining their arms with hotdogs while applying mustard or relish. The neighborhood favorite has been serving diner food since 1916 and is known for its hotdogs. Quick snacks or sweets may be found at Corner Mart, while grocery shopping is done at the Giant Eagle Supermarket on Broad Street.
The Johnstown Inn is the place to go for great food and atmosphere in Conemaugh Township.

Picnics at Melvina Gustkey Memorial Park
Staple Bend Tunnel, built in 1833, marks the first railroad tunnel in the United States. Workers dug on each end to connect the 900-foot tunnel, connecting the two points on December 21, 1832. A few days later, they would celebrate Christmas in the tunnel. Staple Bend was added to the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in 2001. This railroad was the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains. Melvina Gustkey Memorial Park is a frequent picnic location with a fenced-in green space and trails leading to Franklin Ballfield. The park hosts car shows and frequent haunted trail events in October.
