Connoquenessing blends farmland, forests and growing suburbia
Sitting south of a township with the same name and north of its namesake creek, Connoquenessing is a tiny borough filled with the blend of mature forests, long-established farmland and developing suburbia that make up Butler County. “There are four churches, a couple auto shops and no stores. It’s a quiet community. People sit on their porches talking to each other, and you just don’t see that in most communities anymore,” says Amy Pepe, secretary and treasurer of Berean Bible Chapel. Positioned along Route 68, Connoquenessing has evolved from a small farming and oil town into a bedroom community to Butler and the more distant Pittsburgh without losing the tranquility of a sleepy main street and long country roads.
Connoquenessing is a great neighborhood to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Subdivisions and farmland preserve a rural feel
On smaller lots along Connoquenessing Main Street and acreages further from the center of town, single-family homes built throughout the 20th century come in a mix of styles ranging from ornate Victorian-inspired designs to simpler American Foursquares, National gable fronts and ranch-style homes. Depending on lot size, square footage and upkeep needs, homes can sell for $130,000 to $350,000. “Houses in a lot of the borough don’t have mailboxes. You see people going down to the post office and walking their dogs all the time,” Pepe says. Toward the outskirts of Connoquenessing, farmland has been developed into sidewalk-lined suburban subdivisions since the 2010s, with patio homes and varied single-family models for $260,000 to $450,000 plus varied monthly HOA fees. Despite the increase in development, scattered small farms and long stretches of forest-fringed fields help the borough retain a rural atmosphere. Connoquenessing has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10 compared to the national average of 4.

Locally owned restaurants and shopping in Cranberry
While commercial life in Connoquenessing is limited to a couple of auto repair shops, a few restaurants and popular markets are within 3 miles of the borough. Clifford’s Restaurant’s upscale American and European-inspired dinners have cemented its spot as the region’s go-to anniversary and date-night spot. T.J.’s Hideaway serves much more casual bar fare and drinks, often to the tune of live musicians. Up Route 68, seasonal produce and meat from local farmers are the main attractions at Butler Farm Market. For more robust shopping trips, locals can drive to dozens of retailers and chains including Target and Costco 15 miles away in Cranberry Township.

Connoquenessing Borough Park and recreation on the Connie
Stretching past a pond stocked with fish, Connoquenessing Borough Park provides a tree-speckled green space for playground-goers and pickup baseball or basketball players to get together. While the borough is landlocked, anglers and kayakers can find unofficial access points and the Major Washington Canoe Launch along the meandering flow of the Connoquenessing Creek, affectionately called the Connie, within a few miles of home.

Annual Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company events
The Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company keeps the community festive annually with costume contests at the Halloween Parade & Not-Too-Spooky Trail and firetruck visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus during the five-hour long neighborhood route of the Santa Run. “Our church hosted a Light Up Night and we're going to start coordinating it so that the Santa Run ends with our tree lighting,” Pepe says.
Route 68 connects Connoquenessing to key commuter routes
Route 68 swings east of Connoquenessing Main Street, providing commuters with an 8-mile drive into downtown Butler or the Interstate-79 onramp in Evans City. Downtown Pittsburgh is a total of 33 miles south by car or Butler Transit Authority Commuter Bus taking off from the Route 528 Park & Ride. Limited BTA bus service is available at Route 68 stops within the borough in the morning and evening.
