Conway’s quiet township offers access to amenities

Country living in Michigan’s heartland defines life in Conway Township. The community of about 3,600 residents offers land outside of the Lansing and Detroit metro areas. "It's a great place to live and you can see that by the population and how it's growing," says Realtor and Livingston County resident Heather Mahon with Keller Williams Realty. Mahon has over two decades of experience in Michigan real estate. "It's similar to other townships, with many farms, rural properties and a community feel... It's a good place to live." Even with Conway's rural lifestyle, the township is close to Interstates, so major employers, dining and retail are all within about 40 miles of Conway Township.

Country homes on acreages priced between $200K and $800K

Conway offers residents plenty of room to spread out amongst cornfields and oak woods. There are some small pockets of development across the township, but many houses are spread out on plots ranging between one and 10 acres. Older homes are ranch-style, farmhouse-style or Colonial Revival. Newer builds are typically in contemporary Colonial Revival, New Traditional or even modern farmhouse styles. Across the board, prices range between $200,000 and $800,000, depending on the size of the lot and the number of renovations required. Mahon also notes that Livingston County has lower property taxes, a plus for buyers.

Students can explore aviation and agriscience programs

Fowlerville Community Schools serves just over 2,500 students and earns an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Kindergarten through second grade attend H.T. Smith Elementary, which has a C-plus rating. Third through fifth grades attend C-rated Natalie Kreeger Elementary. C-plus-rated Fowlerville Junior High serves sixth through eighth grade. Fowlerville High scores a B-minus, the pipeline's highest Niche rating. Students here can apply to career and technical education programs such as aviation, phlebotomy and agriscience.

Conway is close to trails, golf courses and fairgrounds

Various outdoor recreation spots surround Conway Township. About 10 miles east, Lutz County Park is a nature-centric green space with a 1.3-mile trail and scenic views of woods, meadows and wetlands home to migrating sandhill cranes and red-tailed hawks. Nearby, the Oak Grove State Game Area offers deer hunting and fishing, with boat ramps along Bogue Creek and Indian Lake. Hunters Ridge and Oak Lane Golf Courses offer public tee times less than 10 miles from the township. The rest of the area's recreation is in Fowlerville, about 5 miles south. Centennial Park offers basketball courts, picnic areas and a playground. A few blocks away, the Fowlerville Fairgrounds host events throughout the year, the biggest being the Fowlerville Family Fair. In addition to agricultural exhibits and 4-H contests, there are carnival rides, food vendors, demolition derbies and a rodeo.

Essentials are in nearby Fowlerville with more along I-96

About 5 miles south of Conway Township is Fowlerville, one of several towns that offer dining and retail along Interstate 96. Fowlerville has a Walmart, supply shops and eateries like Fowlerville Farms Family Restaurant. "The Farms" has served the community for nearly 40 years, offering soups, sandwiches and breakfast platters. About 10 miles southeast in Howell, the Kensington Valley Outlets provide a variety of chain retailers. There's also a VG's Grocery and several chain and locally owned restaurants. More dining and big box retail are in nearby cities like Lansing, 35 miles from the township. Though locals like Mahon don't consider this too out of the way, the lifelong Livingston County resident notes buyers should be aware. "I think people should go to the nearest town and make sure they're okay with driving 10 miles or more for groceries," Mahon says.

Rural roads lead to Lansing, Howell and Detroit

Fowlerville Road and State Road, which run north to south through Conway, connect the car-dependent township to surrounding communities. Interstate 96 is less than 10 miles from Conway, and Interstate 69 is about 20 miles away. These major roads lead to larger cities like Lansing, 35 miles from Conway. Lansing is home to Capital Region International, the nearest airport. I-96 also brings residents to Howell, home to the closest medical center, Trinity Health Livingston Hospital. Detroit and Ann Arbor are both within 70 miles of the township. Conway has a one out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the national score of four out of 10.
