Dodson Branch is a small neighborhood in Jackson County, Tenn. Twelve miles north of Cookeville and about halfway between Nashville and Knoxville, Dodson Branch is home to fewer than 2,000 residents in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. “Dodson Branch is a very rural area, without much commercial business,” says Ashley Martin, a real estate agent with The Realty Firm in Cookeville. “People drive 25 minutes to Cookeville for both work and play.”
Cookeville has an art program with many murals including the Coca-Cola mural in Downtown.

There are no restaurants inside Dodson Branch, but there are several in the surrounding countryside. In Center Grove, an unincorporated community 10 miles to the west, Nana’s Place serves classic barbeque and house-made desserts. Helen’s Restaurant, 2 miles north along South Grundy Quarles Highway, is a Southern spot known for its fried-fish sandwiches and country-fried steaks, both served with okra and cornbread. Within Dodson Branch, there are no grocery stores—the nearest is Gainesboro’s Save A Lot, 15 miles northwest of the neighborhood.

The eighth-largest waterfall in Tennessee is in a state park nearby
While the neighborhood has no public parks, there are still places to get outside. Cummins Falls State Park, a 306-acre public park on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River, is 5 miles south of Dodson Branch. Home to Tennessee’s eighth-largest waterfall— the 75-foot-high Cummins Falls— and a challenging hiking trail, this state park is known for summertime recreation. For year-round gatherings, locals head to the Dodson Branch Community Center, which hosts a fish fry on the first Saturday of each month. The center also hosts public events such as car shows and holiday dinners, and rents out its dining space for private events.

Jackson County School District serves Dodson Branch students
Students growing up in Dodson Branch may enroll in Jackson County School District. Students may attend Dodson Branch Elementary School, graded B by Niche, for preschool through eighth grade, and Jackson County High School, graded C plus, for ninth through 12th grade. After high school, students can attend Tennessee Tech University or Volunteer State Community College, both in Cookeville, or head 16 miles northeast to attend the Tennessee College of Applied Technology or Volunteer State’s Livingston satellite campus. “Tennessee Tech in particular is a fairly big school, so we have a large student population in Cookeville and its surrounding counties,” says Martin.
