Historic Coopersburg was settled in the 1730's and was later renamed after Judge Peter Cooper Historic District.
The heart of Coopersburg
Coopersburg Historic District is a 1-mile stretch at the heart of Coopersburg proper, a 20-square-mile suburb of Allentown. Though the native Lenni Lenape people inhabited this land as far back as 10,000 years, the borough we know of today has 18th century origins, making it one of Pennsylvania’s earliest settlements. Once regarded for its cattle industry, Coopersburg is now known for its historic homes mostly centered along Main Street. Locals gather here from all over to partake in the small-town city life of this historic district. “We are sort of the town center of the Southern Lehigh Valley,” says Coopersburg Borough Manager Tim Paashaus.
Take a drive though Coopersburg Historic District and you'll see many beautiful Colonial style homes.
Well preserved historic homes
Houses in Coopersburg radiate from Main Street. Many of the homes lining this central thoroughfare reflect Queen Anne, Victorian and Colonial Revival-style properties that are well-maintained to preserve the area's charm. “We can’t tell everyone to paint their door red but there’s certainly the idea that we’re honoring a particular character here,” Paashaus says. Outward from Main Street, more ‘50s-era ranch-style homes, Craftsman residences and bungalows enter the architectural scene — a few Tudor-style houses settle among them. Within Coopersburg’s most rural reaches, lot sizes get larger and homes newer and grander. Estates with stone facades and sloped roofs are common as are sprawling yards with fresh checkerboard mow lines. A two-bedroom with opportunities for updates might sell for $200,000 in Coopersburg, a three-bedroom Victorian for $330,000 and a four-bedroom colonial for $450,000. Sprawling residences can travel toward a million.
Investing in pedestrian pathways
The Coopersburg Historic District is investing heavily in pedestrian pathways which has led to new sidewalks, crosswalks, bike paths and streetlights along Main Street. “The streetlights are modeled off the gas lamp lights we used in the 18th century,” Paashaus says. Restaurants and shops sit close together in the historic district, making it easy for locals to get to most of what they need on foot. The area also offers a shared ride service that will take residents to shopping centers within Coopersburg proper. The nearest airport is Lehigh Valley International, 13 miles south via American Parkway.

Held on Saturdays, the event is free to the public and features live music, vendors, activities for the kids and food and drink options. The historical society museum is also located on the second floor of Borough Hall anytime locals want to travel through the neighborhood's timeline.
The inside scoop on dining out
The three main spots people head to in Coopersburg for dinner, drinks and dessert are Coopersburg Diner, Sage Alley Brewery and Inside Scoop — all are either on or within walking distance of Main Street. According to Paashaus, they each have their own unique place and history in the community. “The brewery was converted out of an old house on Main Street and Inside Scoop used to be a lawnmower repair shop. It’s very vintage on the inside. The diner has been a staple for over a decade.” For groceries, locals can visit Giant on Fairmont Road. They may also head to The Promenade Shops in Saucon Township for its AMC Theater, American Eagle Outfitters, Athleta and more.

Explore the Saucon Rail Trail
Coopersburg's main outdoor attractions are the Southern Lehigh Memorial Park on Fairmount Street and the Saucon Rail Trail which runs from Upper to Lower Saucon Township for 7.5 miles. “The rail trail used to be a railroad,” says local and Realtor Jeffrey Torchia of Preferred Properties Plus. “You’ll always see people out riding their bikes and walking it.” Along the trail, neighbors can stop at an unstructured meadow where native plant species grow freely and bees hop along flowers. Southern Lehigh Memorial Park also offers its own woodland trail, public athletic fields and it's the event site for the annual Coopersburg Community Day.
