Endless beaches in a remote Grays Harbor County community

In Copalis Beach, pine forests are mere feet away from endless stretches of sand, dunes home to snowy plovers and the roaring waves of the Pacific Ocean. “People move there for the ocean. There's miles and miles of beach. And Copalis is 15 minutes from Ocean Shores,” says Realtor/broker Marjie Southall who works with John L. Scott Real Estate and has about two decades of experience in the area. The community, located on the west coast of Washington State, is a remote town with a population of less than 500 people. For restaurants and things to do, locals go to Ocean Shores, a tourist-friendly town about 5 miles south. Copalis Beach is near one of the largest razor clam beds in the Pacific Northwest, earning it the nickname "Home of the razor clam.” It's located 75 miles from Olympia and about 25 miles from Aberdeen.

Homes in woodlands by the beach

Along the main road, State Route 109, there are homes in spacious yards interspersed between woodlands. Many of the side streets go into dense forests, where homes are surrounded by fir and ceder trees. Some of these houses have views of the ocean and access to trails leading to the beach. The architecture includes midcentury ranch-style homes, log cabins, contemporary houses and bungalows. Ranch-style homes range from $200,000 to $300,000, while contemporary houses with ocean views range from $600,000 to $800,000. Copalis Beach’s market is slower paced: “There aren’t really any housing trends now. It’s pretty quiet,” Southall says.

Griffiths-Priday State Park and more recreation

Griffiths-Priday State Park, over 350 acres, is the largest recreation space in Copalis Beach. It may not be the easiest walk, with a mile and a half-long trail through coastal dunes before reaching the ocean, but this means the vast beach is secluded and quiet. Visitors can birdwatch and clam dig, while immersed in a peaceful nature setting. Ocean Shores Beach is more crowded but allows for more activities like driving and horseback riding right on the beach. These beaches have cold, choppy water that swimmers must be careful in. At Weatherwax Trail, hikers and their dogs can explore a forest trail dense with local flora: pine trees, ferns and mushrooms. Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park are both north of the community, offering scenic campsites and mountain hiking trails in the heart of the PNW.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
