Close-knit community in Corbett despite spacious lots
Stretching across the rolling terrain west of Larch Mountain, the East Sandy River Area of Corbett is covered with farmland and dense forests. Homes come on acres of land, and though neighbors may have plenty of space between them, the closeness of the community is what compels newcomers. “They want the sense of community. It’s been lost in the digital age, but [people in Corbett] make the community, belly to belly,” says Michelle Carter Smith, a broker with RE/MAX Equity Group who lived in Corbett for more than two decades and raised her two sons there. “Neighbors help neighbors. It doesn’t matter if they are 2 miles away. They are constantly talking to each other, at the post office, at the market, or the grange.”
East Sandy River Area is a rural community with an assortment of working and hobby farms.

Sandy River access at Dabney State Recreation Area
The East Sandy River Area stretches across acres of rolling hills and farm fields, interspersed with unique country homes and farmhouses. The Dabney State Recreation Area makes up 138 of those acres, along a parallel stretch of the Sandy River with a rocky beach that allows for a refreshing dip during the warmer months. A barbecue pit, picnic tables, a nearby volleyball court and horseshoe kits make for a natural gathering space. The park’s 18-hole disc golf course is considered one of the most technical and challenging in the region, though boating, fishing, tubing, rafting and swimming on the Sandy River often upstage on-land sports. The cobbled bottoms and the winding course of the river make it a favorite among those casting a line for salmon and steelhead.

Manufactured homes and farmhouses with generous acreage
Homes in the East Sandy River Area are often concealed at the end of lengthy driveways that stem from winding country roads. Manufactured homes on acres of land come with room for recreational vehicles, boats and livestock. More traditional farmhouses are common too, as well as chalet-style homes—both new and old—equipped with upscale features like saunas and hot tubs. Prices range from $400,000 to $550,000, while larger farmhouses are on anywhere between 2 and 20 acres of land. Those with increased square footage fetch between $700,000 and $1 million.
Ample acreage means space to be outside, especially for children in the area. “They’re not sitting in the house watching TV,” Smith says. “They are riding their horses, riding their quad [bikes] or helping with chores. My kids grew up hiking on Larch Mountain.”

Riverfront dining in the old “Viking Park”
The largely rural community is home to a few local eateries with vibrant histories. Junki’s Riverview Restaurant is a fine riverfront dining establishment on land that was once known as “Viking Park.” Its predecessor was a Swedish café that leased the property from a Swedish heritage organization. Today, milled trees from the surrounding landscape accent the seafood-oriented restaurant, which features entrees like miso-glazed salmon and halibut piccata. Less than 2 miles away, the Historic Springdale Pub serves calzones, pizza and modern bar food like sliders, fish-and-chip baskets and nachos. However, it was originally a service station, roadhouse and mercantile since its early days in 1914. The Glen Irvin Market offers to-go options, like sandwiches, and limited groceries, while neighboring towns like Gresham and Troutdale have large-name grocers such as Fred Meyer and Safeway.
