A sweet city in Crisp County

Cordele comes alive in the summer when its watermelon crop is harvested and shipped nationwide. This small city of about 10,000 is known as the “Watermelon Capital of the World,” beating out other notable watermelon-producing areas in Texas and Arkansas. But melons aren’t the only thing Cordele has going for it. It offers affordable homes and many options for outdoor fun. “We get a lot of snowbirds or travelers on their way to Florida,” says Marlene Kimball, an associate broker with Century 21 Branch and Pope and a resident for the last 44 years. “It still retains that friendly, slow place that southern communities have."

Cordele, GA, proudly holds the title of the watermelon capital of the world, known for its exceptional quality and abundance of this popular fruit.

Small subdivisions with a mix of homes

Cordele’s subdivisions are a mix of traditional suburban and rural. The houses are spread out, but the streets have sidewalks and the lawns are typically landscaped. Still, neighborhoods tend to be on the smaller side. “You don’t have ones with 1,000 houses, and you get lost because all the houses look the same.”

Ranch-style and Minimal Traditional homes are the most common architectural styles. Built primarily between 1950 and 1990, most have had full renovations. A few homes from the 1920s and 1930s are scattered throughout the city, many with their historic charm left intact. The median price for single-family homes is about $270,000.
