Hints of history in Memphis suburb

In Western Tennessee, the suburban community of Cordova sits on the outskirts of Memphis. There aren’t exact boundaries for this sprawling suburb, but it’s generally agreed upon that Cordova makes up much of the land that sits south of Interstate 40 and north of Wolf River; Pisgah Road borders to the east and Whitten Road to the west. Over the decades, this community has switched its name several times but was officially dubbed Cordova in 1900. Historically, this area was known as a prominent railroad town and was home to the Cordova Train Station; although the station is no longer in use, the building has been preserved and remains a historical landmark. Present-day Cordova is mostly an assortment of subdivisions; although the area is primarily residential, a booming commercial area continues to grow along Germantown Parkway. I-40 connects to Interstate 240 and travels into Downtown Memphis.

Homes in secluded subdivisions

New Traditional single-family homes on large lots line residential streets; most feature stone and brick construction as well as front-facing gables, garages and paved driveways. A handful of properties in this area display Colonial-influenced architecture. There are also a number of apartment complexes here with townhouses and condo units, including Cordova Creek Apartments and the Villas at Cordova. Realtor Keri Jayroe with eXp Realty LLC says, “Cordova has really great prices compared to other places.” A majority of the homes here typically cost between $200,000 and $450,000. Most of the houses in the region reside in planned subdivisions that give residents a sense of privacy and removal from an urban landscape.

Explore the sprawling Shelby Farms Park

For outdoor recreation, residents can head to Bert Ferguson Park, a sprawling green space also home to the Cordova Library, a branch of Memphis Public Libraries, and the Bert Ferguson Community Center. At the park itself, sports enthusiasts can practice their athletic skills on a multi-purpose field or head to the tennis courts to perfect their serve. A paved walking path stretches more than a mile and runs through the park. One of Cordova’s most popular spots is Shelby Farms Park, which spans more than 4,500 acres of open land. “The park is both a vibrant community hub and retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life,” says Shelby Farms Park representative Angie Whitefield. Park visitors can participate in various activities, from kayaking to horseback riding. Kids can run through the sprinklers at the Water Play Sprayground while hikers enjoy miles of natural trails. There’s even an adventure center in the park that features a zipline and a rope course that runs through the forest canopy. Several lakes dot Shelby Farms Park, including Chickasaw Lake, Patriot Lake and Trap Lake, a popular fishing spot.

Students served by Memphis-Shelby County Schools

Students in this community attend school within the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district or any nearby private school options. However, expert Realtor Keri Jayroe says that many people “move to Cordova when their kids are no longer school-aged.” Young learners who do live in the area can jumpstart their academic journeys at Cordova Elementary School, rated C by Niche. Students might then head to Cordova Middle School and, later on, Cordova High School, both of which also receive C ratings. Private schools include the Memphis School of Excellence, a C-plus-rated institution that offers an elementary and secondary school. For early education, Cadence Academy is a popular preschool and daycare center.
