Historic town in the countryside
With nearly two dozen of its town center buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Limington immerses its residents in a quiet, countryside setting that dates back to the early 17th century. “We have a small-town feel, and to me, it’s very centrally located between the mountains of New Hampshire and the ocean,” says Cheryl Roy-Stuteville, a local associate broker with RE/MAX Coastal. “You are at least 20 to 30 minutes away from everything, but it’s a private and rural feeling.” The overall CAP Index crime score for Limington is 1, compared to the national average of 4. Students here are served by Maine School Administrative District No. 6, which receives an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Residents here are a little under 30 miles away from Portland via Route 25: “The area boasts predominantly quiet country roads, yet main arteries are conveniently nearby,” says Daniel McDonnell, a local Realtor with Keller Williams Realty.

Hiking trails at Sawyer Mountain
Limington features “several public beaches and extensive public lands crisscrossed with hiking trails suitable for all levels,” McDonnell says. He also adds that residents are only an hour’s drive away from the ocean and New Hampshire’s White Mountains. One of the most popular public beaches is located at Horne Pond and open from Memorial Day through Labor Day; Horne is just one of seven ponds across town. Those looking for a more challenging hike can head to Sawyer Mountain and make the trek up to the summit, the highest point in Limington. For a more relaxed hiking experience, locals might stroll along the River Walk bordering the Little Ossipee River. “There’s also a vibrant ATV and snowmobile culture supported by local clubs,” McDonnell says. “Plus, this region is well known for excellent fishing and boating opportunities.”

Colonials and Cape Cods
This town is primarily residential, with most homes sitting on large, private lots of land, secluded by rolling hills and scattered thickets. According to McDonnell, locals here can find “a wealth of mid-19th-century homes, picturesque stone walls and signs of centuries-old habitation.” Some of the properties in this area even date back to the late 18th century, although many are in need of repair. Roy-Stuteville says that traditional ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and colonials are all common housing styles. “Once in a while, you get a saltbox, very New England,” she adds. “In the last five years, there’s been a significant increase in new construction,” McDonnell says. “It was particularly noticeable during the COVID period.” Most single-family homes in Limington sell between approximately $250,000 and $550,000, although there are a handful of outliers.

Grab a coffee from Snickerdoodles
Despite its rural location, Limington still offers a handful of shopping and dining options for residents. “We have a very fun breakfast and lunch place called Snickerdoodles; they’ve got fancy coffee and really good sandwiches,” Roy-Stuteville says. Across the street from that café is Limington Variety, a local convenience store offering food items and a gas station. A little farther up Route 25, residents can browse a Sleeper’s Supermarket & ACE Hardware and a Dollar General, both of which feature a variety of basic groceries, household necessities and tools. “If you want more food we got to nearby Cornish and Limerick,” Roy-Stuteville says. According to McDonnell, many locals also head to Cornish Village for a range of award-winning restaurants, a historic district and antique shopping opportunities.
