Cottage Grove is home to strong schools and community pride

Homebuyers looking for a quiet Twin Cities suburb often find themselves drawn to Cottage Grove, a community just southeast of Saint Paul. The city’s houses fit a variety of lifestyles, from older ramblers to New Traditional homes and townhomes. Strong public schools, year-round fun at regional parks and a calendar chock-full of events help create a small-town feel, even with Saint Paul less than 20 miles away.

What buyers often pay for ramblers and two-story traditional homes

Cottage Grove’s housing stock was built over many decades, resulting in a mix of styles. Older ramblers, split-levels and two-story traditional homes often range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $700,000s, and New Traditional homes built after 2020 can run from the mid-$300,000s to the lower $900,000s. Townhomes commonly sell between the mid-$100,000s and the lower $700,000s. The growing city tends to be more expensive than nearby Saint Paul Park but less expensive than Woodbury to the north. “The housing market in Cottage Grove is strong,” says Jessica Fisher, a Realtor with Re/Max Professionals who often sells in the area. “It has a great variety of housing for every phase of life. We have several new developments being built, so those who want to build their own home find our community appealing.”

Residents have plenty of parks to explore

Cottage Grove has close to 40 neighborhood parks, and many of them have playgrounds, ball fields, sports courts, ice rinks and picnic areas. Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, overseen by Washington County, is where residents often go fishing or kayaking. Hikers and bikers use the park’s trail system most of the year, but each winter, the cross-country skiers take over. River Oaks Golf Course takes public tee times for its 18-hole course with Mississippi River views.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
