The Heights is a gateway to the east end of Council Bluffs
The Council Bluffs Gateway sculpture sits astride West Broadway next to a scenic overlook in The Heights, an eclectic neighborhood on the east end of the city. When President Abraham Lincoln visited the area in 1859, he decided it should serve as the eastern terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad. Eight score and six years later, railroad tracks still bisect the neighborhood, recalling a formative era in Iowa history. A statue dedicated to Lincoln stands tall down the street. “The Lincoln Monument at the top of the hill overlooks Omaha, with nice views of the skyline,” says Clint Brunow, a broker associate with Heartland Properties who was born and raised in Council Bluffs. Homebuyers can choose from a range of housing styles, price ranges and property sizes, depending on where in the neighborhood they land.
The Lincoln Monument Overlook in The Heights is a great spot to enjoy the view.

A mix of contemporary and historic homes
Small single-story cottages and ranch-style houses occupy a narrow grid of residential streets west of the railroad tracks. However, perched atop curved hilly roads on the eastern side, some larger and more elaborate homes date to the early 20th century. “If someone is looking up in that area, they’re going to be looking for an older historic home,” Brunow says. “All those streets have big, fancy houses that were built 100 years ago.” Split-level, raised ranch-style and contemporary homes are also in the mix, and several apartment complexes are grouped near North 8th Street. Rows of mature trees accent sidewalks and paved driveways, and lots can measure up to a half-acre. Home sales are infrequent, and most properties disappeare from the market within three weeks of listing. Recently, cottages sold for about $100,000 to $200,000. Foursquare and split-level homes were priced in the $200,000 to $300,000 range.
There are many historic homes found in The Heights.

Home of the Lincoln Monument
Sternhill Park claims a central location on the eastern side of the neighborhood, with a ring of young trees surrounding a playground, picnic pavilion and soccer field. In Lincoln Park, a monument commemorates the 16th president’s historic visit to Council Bluffs in 1859. The memorial sits on an outcropping that offers arresting views of the Omaha skyline. The neighborhood is also home to Broadway Skate Park, a skateboarding and rollerblading destination featuring a snake run, a fun box, rails and stairs.

A mile from the Historic 100 Block and Bayliss Park
The Historic 100 Block, Council Bluffs’ dining and nightlife hub, is about a mile away, adjacent to the Bayliss Park business district. Two major medical centers, CHI Health Mercy and Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, flank Kanesville Boulevard roughly a mile east. Residents have a 5-mile drive to downtown Omaha on the Nebraska side of the border. The closest airport is Eppley Airfield, about 8 miles away. Buses on the Omaha Metro Transit system stop along West Broadway, but most residents rely on cars.
Life alongside the railroad tracks
Freight trains still regularly rumble on the tracks, so residents should be prepared for noise and the occasional traffic delay. Additionally, Council Bluffs is in Tornado Alley, where storm watches and warnings are part of life, especially in spring.
