Winding streets in Wickham lead to the Historic 100 Block
The Wickham neighborhood is settled on the eastern side of Council Bluffs, an older part of the city known for its historic monuments and early 20th-century homes. Winding residential streets stretch south of Kanesville Boulevard, one of the primary thoroughfares connecting the city to downtown Omaha. “That’s in what we call the east end, which is desirable because it’s hilly,” says Bill Simmons, a Realtor with BHHS Ambassador Real Estate. “The hills make it a little more attractive than the flat north-south, east-west streets. I think they made the streets out of the old horse paths. It just looks quaint.” Residents are also steps away from the restaurants and nightlife in the city’s Historic 100 Block.
The Wickham neighborhood is build into the bluffs that surround downtown.
Wickham and Council Bluffs is a warm and welcoming community.

A variety of housing styles on small shaded parcels
Wickham is a predominantly residential neighborhood, and most people own their homes. Most houses were built between 1920 and 1950, but some have been remodeled with updated bathrooms, kitchens and flooring. Bungalows, Craftsman-style, raised ranch-style and Foursquare homes sit atop shady knolls on curving streets. Although lot sizes are very small, many properties include driveways and ribbons of lawn with artful landscaping and shrubbery. Well-maintained sidewalks make it easier to navigate the hilly roads on foot. Home sales are infrequent, and when properties do enter the market, they tend to sell within 25 days, as opposed to the national average of 46 days. Buyers might spend $125,000 to $225,000 for a home in this neighborhood. Because Council Bluffs is in the swath of the U.S. known as Tornado Alley, potential residents are advised to look for properties with basements or storm shelters. Homeowners’ insurance that covers wind and storm damage is a must.

Dining and nightlife on the Historic 100 Block
Wickham residents are within walking distance of the Historic 100 Block, Council Bluffs’ primary dining and drinking destination. “Nightlife is pretty abundant down the 100 Block,” Simmons says. Brick buildings along West Broadway are packed with watering holes like Barley’s and Glory Days Sports Bar & Grill, both of which feature outdoor seating. Gamers can hit vintage arcade consoles and Skee-Ball lanes while sipping their favorite beverages at Maggie May’s Rodeo Saloon. With classic breakfast fare and cocktails in an upscale setting, Caddy’s Brunch Bar makes a good morning-after spot. The closest grocery option is Super Saver on North Broadway, less than a mile away.
