Lewisburg is a hilly neighborhood near Devou Park and Interstate 71
Once its own little town, Lewisburg is now a quaint neighborhood with older homes in Covington. A wide creek once divided the two communities, and has been replaced with the interstate. The neighborhood was designed around the natural landscape. “Geographically, it wasn’t planned like a traditional city,” says Kaitlin Bryan, regulatory services manager and historic preservation specialist. “They built the roads to fit into the topography. It’s built into a very steep hill.” At the top of that hill is one of Covington’s most popular recreation spaces, Devou Park. Besides one longstanding restaurant and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, locals travel to Mainstrasse Village for most shopping and dining. Downtown Cincinnati is about 2 miles away.
19th century homes and new condos overlook Covington
Front doors let out onto the sidewalks of Lewisburg, where most properties date back to the mid-19th century. “Being on that hill, more of the houses have views overlooking Covington,” Bryan says. Victorian-era styles like Italianate row houses line the streets, and there are several bungalows and Craftsman-style homes. These older residences typically cost $160,000 to $260,000, although investment properties have sold for as little as $20,000. Contemporary condo and townhouse developments have come up in the past 20 years, and more are under construction. Depending on location, these cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.
Students attend Covington public and private schools
Covington Independent School District offers school choice. Students can start at John G. Carlisle Elementary, which Niche gives a B-minus. Holmes Middle School receives a C-minus. Career and technical education programs at the C-rated Holmes High School include media arts and information technology. Prince of Peace Catholic School, part of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, is in the neighborhood and is unrated by Niche.
Interstate 71 separates Lewisburg from the rest of the city
Lewisburg residents walk from the neighborhood to nearby parks and restaurants, but interstates 71 and 75 stand between the neighborhood and the rest of Covington, so most people drive to get into the city. There are some pedestrian underpasses. Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky has a bus route along Pike Street. St. Elizabeth Healthcare Covington Hospital is about 1 mile away. Most people fly out of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, about a 10-mile drive.
Locals eat at Herb and Thelma’s Tavern and in Mainstrasse Village
Herb and Thelma’s Tavern is a pillar of the Lewisburg community. Opening as Heine’s Cafe in 1939, this cash-only establishment serves burgers, chili and other American fare. “The neighborhood keeps it alive, everyone loves it,” Bryan says. “We just gave them a historic electric sign grant to restore their original neon sign. It looks great.” There are more dining options and several boutiques and bars in Mainstrasse Village, about 1 mile away. Mama’s on Main is an Italian restaurant owned by the same family as Otto’s, a New American bistro that has been open for over 20 years. Kroger is the nearest grocery store, about 1 mile away. “The Kroger on Madison is really small, so people usually go there for one or two things,” Bryan says. “To do actual grocery shopping, they travel out of town.” The Covington Farmers Market has fresh produce every Saturday morning from May through October. Target, Home Depot and Walmart are about 4 miles away.
Lewisburg is next to Devou Park, Covington’s largest park
Devou Park, Covington’s largest park at over 700 acres, is a short walk from most Lewisburg homes. There are several playgrounds, over 8 miles of mountain bike trails, an 18-hole golf course and the Devou Memorial Overlook. “It’s really, really beautiful, and up on the lookout, there’s a view of Covington and Cincinnati,” Bryan says. Also on the grounds is the Behringer-Crawford Museum, which has exhibits highlighting local artists and history. “It is a wonderful museum,” Bryan says. “It is mostly geared towards kids, in my opinion.” The museum hosts several events, including the Music@BCM Summer Concert Series and the annual Holly Jolly Days. “I like going up there for Christmas,” Bryan says. From mid-November to mid-January, attendees can explore the holiday-themed toy train exhibits and vintage Christmas decorations. A few smaller parks are nearby, including the playground at Father Hanses Park and Ludlow City Park, which has a skatepark.
Residents attend city events like Pride and Oktoberfest
Covington hosts several events throughout the year, from the annual Northern Kentucky Pride Parade and Festival to celebrations of the city’s German heritage. Once the parade rides through Mainstrasse Village, attendees at Pride listen to live music and explore over 100 vendors. Oktoberfest, held every September, is a weekend of German cuisine, music and the Stein Hoist competition, where people see who can hold a full stein of beer the longest.
