Nature abounds in and around Cragsmoor
The hamlet of Cragsmoor sits on top of the Shawangunk Ridge, almost completely encircled by the natural wonders of the “Gunks” in southeastern New York. Its name might sound like a town out of a Stephen King novel, but never fear – forests and preserves comprise about half of this neighborhood without a traffic light, a prime venue for outdoor recreation any season of the year. In the Shawangunk State Forest, campers rough it, go on hikes or try their luck at fishing while out in the wilderness. In the winter, some snowshoe across the frozen slush, while others lock their boots into skis and carve a path through the snow.
Regardless of season, visitors are treated to an active population of wildlife and surroundings including mini-waterfalls, moss-covered rocks and even some caves within the ridge. Those reveling in the area’s remoteness should keep the principles of “leave no trace” in mind, though. “It draws more hikers, especially because of the mountains,” says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North, adding that there’s options ranging from standard trails to extreme rock climbing. “There’s hiking to no end in the beauty of the mountains.”
Small-town landmarks and a central intersection
The area where Cragsmoor, Dellenbaugh and Henry Roads meet serves as a mini town center for the neighborhood, with the post office, library and historical society all just off the intersection. Cragsmoor Stone Church is one of the older landmarks of the area, located in one of the northernmost parts of the neighborhood. It was built just before 1900 and still hosts services, weddings, memorials and other events, and visitors take in views of the valley from its stone arch entrance. Farther away, Bethel Woods is about 40 miles west and hosted the original Woodstock festival in 1969.

Natural preserves encircling Cragsmoor
From the Shawangunk Mountains Lookout on Route 52, on the west side of the neighborhood, there’s an area where sightseers can pull off the road and gaze out over the mountainous landscape’s rolling hills and seemingly endless forest canopy. One of the ridge’s most iconic naturally-occurring wonders are the ice caves within its slopes. “They’re basically caves which are shielded from the hot summer sun,” Stier says. “You’d go in, and there’d still be ice – you’re all sweaty, and then, all of a sudden, you’re in these caves. It’s kind of unique and fun to do.”
With the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest, Bear Hill Nature Preserve and Sam’s Point Area of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve all part of the neighborhood, recreation is never far away. The Bear Hill trail, just over a mile long, offers scenic views, while Sam’s Point has pine barrens, waterfalls and forests within. “It’s also close to a very vibrant fishing area,” Stier says. “This is fishing where real, professional guys come in to fish for trout. It’s kind of in the middle of many protected reservoirs you can fish at, or if you want an easy trail you can do that.”

Spacious properties on rural roads
Ranch-style and split-level homes are among the most common architecture found in Cragsmoor, along with custom and contemporary designs incorporating brick, stone and Tudor-style elements. Properties are sparse, though, in terms of both availability and geographic location. "Cragsmoor is a bedroom community of the Ellenville area,” Stier says. The price range can span from around $200,000 for smaller homes to over $700,000 for the more spacious designs, or even into the millions for larger properties. “You can go from everywhere with some raw land to houses that could be $2.4 million with 34 acres of property,” Stier says. “Inventory is very low in Cragsmoor and the surrounding area.” Roads are often lined with trees and wind through the landscape, with few homes directly side-by-side.
Though much of Cragsmoor is historic, some more recently built houses are spread throughout.

Restaurants beyond Cragsmoor
On the Rocks, the only restaurant in the neighborhood, sits right off Route 52. The locally-owned establishment is open six days a week and serves up American fare in a cabin-style atmosphere. More dining options and grocery shopping require a trip up the road to Ellenville or beyond. “They don’t have a grocery store,” Stier says of Cragsmoor. “You have to go to Ellenville or Spring Glen.” Restaurants in Ellenville include Gaby’s Café and Ellenville Spice Fusion, among an assortment of eateries off the village’s central intersection. Stier adds that larger-scale shopping outlets, like a Walmart, are just under 10 miles north in the hamlet of Napanoch.
On The Rocks is the only restaurant within Cragsmoor and serves up traditional American fare.
Nearby Ellenville has restaurants like Gaby's and Tony & Nicks for eating out.

State routes in southeastern New York
Route 52 serves as the primary thoroughfare for Cragsmoor, be it heading to Ellenville or vice versa. “People usually center themselves by heading on Route 52 to Ellenville,” Stier says. The road runs through much of the southern half of the neighborhood and serves as part of the northeastern-facing boundary before extending farther to Ellenville. “You come into Ellenville and you head on Route 52 into Cragsmoor,” Stier says, adding that the road runs up and over part of the mountain. “Route 52, as it heads east from Cragsmoor, will take you by different roads you can go on to climb the mountain to enjoy different areas of the park.” The nearby Route 209 connects to areas like Kingston around 35 miles northeast, and New York City is about 90 miles south.
A single stop for schooling to the north
Education is found less than seven miles north in Ellenville, where one campus serves students from kindergarten all the way up through 12th grade. It’s divided into three schools, though they’re situated on a single campus. Ellenville Elementary School spans up through sixth grade and gets a C from Niche. It's followed by Ellenville High School, which rounds out grade-school education and receives a B. Clubs there include jazz band, African drumming, skiing and media arts.
