Creola experiencing modest growth in jobs, construction
Creola is growing but not in a way that threatens the character of the small Alabama city. The community 15 miles north of Mobile added about a dozen new homes and a few businesses in 2024. That includes the headquarters and manufacturing operations for Superior Air Parts, which will bring nearly 200 jobs. “People are looking to relocate here,” says Marcy Brown, the city clerk. “We get calls all the time.” Meanwhile, waterways, bayous and oak and pine forests still surround the community of less than 2,000 people. As Creola grows at a gentle pace, it hasn’t lost the atmosphere that convinced Brown and her husband to move into the community when they relocated to Mobile County seven years ago. “It’s not fast-paced. It’s quiet and beautiful. When I first went through the city, I thought ‘This is where I get to live? This place is absolutely gorgeous.’”

Simple home styles on wide lots
On the outskirts of town, minimal traditional and mobile homes are scattered on flat, wide lots. Sidewalks are uncommon and driveways are often dirt or gravel, but many home enjoy privacy thanks to rows of pines or live oaks separating them from their neighbors. Closer to the center of Creola, ranch homes are closer together, but backyards are often big enough for swimming pools. Homes were generally built before the ‘90s, but new traditional styles built since 2010 are spread around town. Prices typically vary from the mid-$100,000s to about $250,000.
Federal flood zones cover parts of Creola, particularly the land around Gunnison Creek. Homeowners in these zones may be required by mortgage lenders to buy flood insurance. Meanwhile, Creola’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Teens pursue certificates, internships through high school academies
Public school students are zoned to North Mobile County K-8 School about 6 miles north of Creola, and the school gets a C-plus grade from Niche. B-minus-rated Citronelle High School organizes most of its student body into six “academies,” career-specific programs in fields like manufacturing and health sciences that students join at the end of their freshman year. Students take at least one course related to their academy each year, with some earning industry certificates and landing internships before they graduate.

Municipal Park and Gunnison Creek highlight local recreation
Creola Municipal Park has been one of the community’s go-to recreation spots for nearly 50 years. Visitors use the park’s various fields for baseball, disc golf and soccer. In fact, Municipal Park is home to North Mobile Soccer Club, a nonprofit youth league. An annual Fourth of July celebration brings inflatables, games and food vendors to the park before an evening fireworks show called Thunder in the Park lights up the sky. Brown is a certified pyrotechnic who oversees the fireworks show, and she’s also taken it upon herself to beef up the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at neighboring city hall. “I’ve invested in two snow machines,” she says of the December event, which also features visits from Santa Claus and the Grinch.
Paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes into Gunnison Creek from Juanita Crenshaw Park to explore the windy waterway that links up with the Mobile River. Creola expects to open its newest green space, Veterans Memorial Park, in May 2025. Meanwhile, beach days on the Gulf Coast are about 90 minutes away.

Restaurants and local shops line Route 43
Stores and restaurants cluster along Route 43, where dining options vary from Toli’s Bistro, an Italian restaurant, to Jack’s, a Southern burger chain that expanded to Creola in 2024. The highway is also where locals find retail essentials, including Dollar General, Creola Ace Hardware & Lumber and Creola Grocery, a local market that’s been in business under various names since the ‘70s. Additional shopping is found 5 miles south in Saraland, where big-box retailers and department stores like Big Lots and Bealls fill a few shopping centers. Farther south in Mobile, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues operate downtown. Creola is home to nearly 10 churches, with backgrounds varying from Baptist to Methodist to nondenominational.
