A riverside community in Cortlandt, New York
Croton-on-Hudson, called Croton by locals, is a haven for artists and outdoor enthusiasts that’s forty minutes from New York by train. "It's a highly creative community," says Valerie Nolan, a recreation assistant with the Croton Recreation and Parks Department. "There are a lot of people who work in the arts in New York and use the train to commute." Marc Cheshire, the Croton Village historian, attributes the town's comfortable atmosphere to its history. "Croton was settled by working-class immigrants who built the Croton Dam, and historically, artists, businesspeople, college professors and journalists have had summer homes in the village." That tradition extends into today. "You might find the descendent of a dam worker living next to a writer for The New York Times," says Cheshire. "It's that combination of people that creates the social atmosphere in Croton."

Life happens at the park and on the Hudson
The village is often buzzing with activity. The ring of bicycle bells sound along the streets, and soccer balls thump in the grass at Croton Landing Park, one of the village's riverside green spaces. Croton is known for its river views and wooded landscape. "Croton has incredible natural beauty," says Nolan. Croton Point Park is one of the village's most popular outdoor areas. This 500-acre expanse of land stretches out like a curved finger into the Hudson River, with plenty of space to camp and relax along the waterfront. "We're a community of people who like to do things," Nolan says. The Hudson River is a launching point for the Croton Yacht Club, which has a dock along the river. Hudson National Golf Club is about two miles from the area, and has an 18-hole course and a clubhouse with a bar and grill.

5k Races and movies at the park
The village hosts regular events at Senasqua Park, including a summer concert series and weekly movie nights, where a projector screen shows movies set against the Hudson River. The Hudson River Arts & Crafts Festival is held in Senasqua Park every September, and showcases the photography, woodworking and jewelry of local artists. The community comes together every October for the Marc Chapin Run Against Hunger, where the motto is "When in doubt, do something," a saying from the race's founder. The event's 1 mile, 5k and 10k races have raised money to fight world and local hunger and food insecurity since 1980.
Black Cow for coffee, Blue Pig for ice cream
Croton's sense of community extends into its local businesses. Black Cow Coffee is a warmly lit café with well-worn wooden tables, and Raga Indian Cuisine is a local favorite for lunch and dinner. The Blue Pig, located in a small blue cottage, serves locally sourced ice cream with ingredients that are grown in the shop's own garden or purchased from local farmers. Super Foodtown of Croton, about two miles north of most homes in the neighborhood, offers groceries. 3rd Universe Comic Emporium offers comic books, video games and other memorabilia, and has two store cats, Spock and Malcolm. For big shopping trips and upscale dining, New York is a 40-minute train ride away.
