Bassett Creek features a large park of the same name near Minneapolis

Bassett Creek is a suburban neighborhood anchored by a popular park of the same name. Bassett Creek Park is the largest park in Crystal, Minnesota, a suburb just outside of Minneapolis. An appealing collection of homes is concentrated on the neighborhood’s north side, and the eponymous, 85-acre park takes up much of the south side. Crystal is primarily a residential suburb, and homeowners in Bassett Creek enjoy relative seclusion in an attractive, natural setting. But residents also enjoy proximity to Interstate 94 and the freeway system that connects them to Minneapolis and other Twin Cities destinations. “It’s a very nice, first-ring suburb that is close to everything, and very family friendly,” says Jospeh Houghton of Re/Max Results, who highlights access to parks and schools and homes with good-sized yards.

A mix of original owners and first-time homebuyers

“The neighborhood, in general, has a lot of first-time homebuyers, but there are still a lot of original owners, so with the turnover, there’s a good variety of households,” Houghton says. Ranch-style designs are prominent among the neighborhood’s mix of housing options. Traditional single-level ranches and ramblers are the most common, and multi-level midcentury designs can also be found. “Solid, well-built homes that are more affordable than homes in the next tier of suburbs,” Houghton says. These homes mingle with a variety of older homes featuring Colonial influences and large contemporary homes along quiet, sometimes hilly streets. Mature trees and spacious yards stand out amid the residential landscape. Prices typically range from around $200,000 to $500,000-plus. Two- and three-bedroom townhomes are a multi-family alternative. They are priced from around $260,000 to $325,000.

Bassett Creek Park offers 85 acres of outdoor amenities

Bassett Creek Park offers a blend of active and passive recreation across its 85 acres. The northern half features a ballfield and includes a disc golf course and a playground. Visitors can fish the pond that is the southern half’s premier attraction. Walking paths wind through the park. Valley Place Park, which features a sledding hill, is among other community parks that offer additional amenities and open spaces. Nature areas along Bassett Creek and the Mississippi riverfront are other nearby destinations, and Medicine Lake is one of the many surrounding waterways for residents to explore. “The neighborhood gets a lot of people who like to enjoy the outdoors,” Houghton says.

Robbinsdale Area Schools gets high marks for diversity

The neighborhood is served by Robbinsdale Area Schools, a district that earns an overall grade of B-minus from Niche, with an A-plus for diversity. Younger students can attend Noble Elementary, which features coding classes and is C-rated by Niche. Older students can attend Sandburg Middle School, rated C-plus, and Robbinsdale Armstrong Senior High School, rated B. The district offers International Baccalaureate courses from elementary through high school. Students looking to attend different schools can apply for in-district transfers and open-enrollment transfers to schools in another district. Students can also apply to attend magnet schools, and a magnet lottery is held in March to announce the winners.

Shopping and dining nearby; downtown Minneapolis is 20 minutes away

Cub-Crystal provides a convenient grocery shopping option just outside of the neighborhood. Lunds & Byerlys Golden Valley, another grocer, anchors the nearby Spring Gate Shopping Center. Milton’s is a casual restaurant adjacent to the neighborhood along 36th Avenue. More dining destinations are close by on the road that runs along the neighborhood’s north side. Larger shopping centers are concentrated about 10 minutes north in Crystal. Residents can also make the 20-minute drive to downtown Minneapolis, which features an array of contemporary shopping and dining options and cultural attractions such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Hennepin Theater District. “Downtown Minneapolis is more dense and more diverse, with tons of options for art and entertainment,” Houghton says. The Mall of America in Bloomington, the largest mall in the country, is about a 20-mile drive from the community.

Easy access to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul

Downtown Minneapolis, the economic hub of the state’s largest city, is less than 10 miles away. St. Paul, the state capital, and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are both roughly 20 miles away. Closer to home, residents can catch the bus in the neighborhood for travel to local points of interest. North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale is about 3 miles from the neighborhood. Those new to the area should be aware that travel can be impacted by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall typical of the Twin Cities region.
