Crystal neighborhood offers shopping, parks and access to downtown Minneapolis

Homes in Becker are moderately spaced, with clean lawns and tall, well-spaced trees that create an open, expansive atmosphere. The neighborhood sits on the north side of Crystal, Minnesota, a suburb of about 23,000 residents, about 12 miles northwest of Minneapolis. “It’s a second-ring suburb,” says Kath Hammerseng, a Realtor with Sohus Real Estate Group, part of Edina Realty. “People really dig the proximity to downtown.” Bound by major thoroughfares and home to several neighborhood parks and two shopping centers, Becker offers its residents small, midcentury homes at relatively affordable prices and access to the Robbinsdale Area School District.

Ranch-style homes from the midcentury are typical of Becker

Ranch-style homes and half-stories are typical styles, but there is also the rare Colonial Revival design. Many homes here were built in the 1950s and feature driveways and detached garages. Sidewalks line major streets but are absent from the purely residential roads. Prices range from $225,000 to $400,000, but a few larger builds from the 2020s near Iron Horse Park can sell for up to $610,000. The Crystal Airport is a few blocks northeast of Becker, but noise doesn’t seem to be much of a problem as the airport doesn’t run commercial flights. “It’s not incredibly impactful,” Hammerseng says of the airport. “There’s not much activity there.” Like many neighborhoods in Crystal, Becker does not have a homeowner or neighborhood association.

Becker Park’s redesign aims to foster community

Becker Park is the largest in the neighborhood. The park’s 2020 redesign emphasized fostering community through gathering spaces and an inclusive play structure. “They’ve rebuilt Becker Park, and now it’s more of a pickleball and community area,” Hammerseng says. Elm Grove Park is a pocket park with a playground and green space on the western edge. Iron Horse Park at the southern edge is a bit larger than Elm Grove Park and offers a basketball court and open space. New Hope Ice Arena is a couple blocks south and has two indoor ice rinks and a walking track.

Crystal Shopping Center on the north side of Becker

A good chunk of Becker is commercial: both Crystal Shopping Center and Crystal Gallery, another shopping area, lie on the north side of the neighborhood, where residents can find Target and other chain stores and restaurants. For groceries, Aldi is just across Bass Lake Road while Supermercado y Pandaderia LomaBonita is in Crystal Shopping Center. Big Louie’s Bar and Grill is a long-standing Crystal dining option. “Big Louie’s has been around a long time,” Hammerseng says. “They’re a burger joint.” For more dining variety, including brewpubs Wicked Wort and Nouvelle Brewing by Travail, residents can head into nearby Robbinsdale, under 3 miles from Becker.
