Midcentury homes with access to Minneapolis and the Twin Lakes
Cavanagh Oaks sits at the eastern edge of Crystal, Minnesota, a Minneapolis suburb just west of State Highway 100. Composed of small, midcentury homes on well-kept lots, the neighborhood’s quiet streets have an open feeling. While the homes here are similar to the rest of Crystal in terms of size and design, Cavanagh Oaks’ location, on the shore of the southernmost of the Twin Lakes, provides a unique quality to this neighborhood. “The Twin Lakes effect has a good impact on Cavanagh Oaks,” says Kath Hammerseng, a Realtor with Sohus Real Estate Group, part of Edina Realty. “It’s a sweet little neighborhood: isolated, very quiet, no through traffic. That’s really a desirable feature of Cavanagh Oaks.” Other highlights include convenient proximity to both downtown Minneapolis and Crystal’s local shopping and dining options.

Small midcentury homes and a handful of lakeside properties
Largely built in the midcentury, homes in Cavanagh Oaks are typically ranch-style, half-stories or bi-levels. Well-maintained lawns and well-spaced, mature trees give the neighborhood the feel of a classic American suburb. Some roads have sidewalks, and many properties feature driveways and detached garages. Single-family homes usually range in price from $225,000 to $440,000, though there are a handful of newer builds that can be more expensive. Proximity to Twin Lakes is a factor in costs, too. Lakeshore properties can reach almost $700,000. “The lakes are desirable for sure,” Hammerseng says. The Crystal Airport is just north of Cavanagh Oaks. According to Hammerseng, though, other than an annual Father’s Day event, there is little activity at this noncommercial airport and its noise level is negligible.

Minnesota Highway 100 is a major Twin Cities route and a good option for residents trying to get downtown Minneapolis, about 10 miles away. “Jump on Highway 100, and you’re there in 10 minutes,” Hammerseng says. Minneapolis has a bike-friendly reputation, and Cavanagh Oaks does have bike lanes on several neighboring streets, including Broadway and County Road 81. A light rail expansion is planned for Crystal, with the line scheduled to open in 2030. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is 23 miles away. North Memorial Health’s Robbinsdale Hospital is about 3 miles south on 81.

Cavanagh Oaks is secluded from commercial areas, but they are close. Broadway at the western edge of the neighborhood is full of shops and restaurants. SteveO’s Bar and Grill is a go-to spot for wings, according to Hammerseng. North on Broadway, folks will pass Big Louie’s Bar and Grill, a long-standing burger joint, and arrive at Crystal Shopping Center, with a Target, Mexican grocery store and chain shops and restaurants. Just across busy Bass Lake Road is Aldi, about 2 miles from the farthest corner of Cavanagh Oaks. In the other direction on Broadway is downtown Robbinsdale, home to brewpubs, shops and restaurants.
