Skyway's midcentury homes surround a small airport
True to its name, the Skyway neighborhood surrounds a small general aviation airport about 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Its residential blocks feature small parks and midcentury homes at a lower price point than other Crystal neighborhoods. Locals also enjoy access to nearby shopping centers and a quick commute to the Twin Cities via Interstate 94.
Skyway features limited redevelopment among its midcentury housing stock, maintaining the authentic character of homes built during the post-war suburban expansion era.
The Skyway area attracts buyers seeking affordable entry into Crystal's housing market, with midcentury architecture and mature landscaping creating charming residential blocks.

Midcentury ranch and half-story homes priced below nearby areas
Ranch-style homes and half-story Cape Cods are most common throughout the area, generally selling for $275,000 to $340,000. “It’s less expensive houses, mostly built in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s,” says John Clay, a Realtor with Associated Realtors who has worked in the area for nearly 40 years. “You’re not going to have many newer houses, but there’s a little bit of redevelopment.” Tall oak and pine trees shade the moderately sized yards, and homes often feature detached garages. A handful of homes sit on the waterfront at Twin Lake, though they rarely hit the market. Condos are also available, going for $120,000 to $140,000.
The Skyway neighborhood combines affordable living with convenient location, where nearby shopping centers and quick highway access make daily life practical for residents.
Half-story Cape Cod and ranch-style homes dominate Skyway's residential blocks, where small neighborhood parks enhance the community atmosphere in this established aviation-adjacent area.

Crystal Airport limits disruptions for residents
Crystal Airport sits in the center of Skyway. The small airport doesn’t offer commercial flights, but around 100 aircraft take off or land every day. Commercial flights instead route through Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, 23 miles away. Plane noise can occasionally be an issue in the neighborhood, though the airport has procedures to limit disruptiveness. “Crystal is a smaller regional airport,” Clay says. “It’s not like you’re living by the Mall of America and MSP, where the jets are flying over your house.” Metro Transit buses operate around the neighborhood and connect it to the Twin Cities. The nearest emergency room is at the North Memorial Health Robbinsdale Hospital, about 4 miles away.
Aviation enthusiasts are drawn to Skyway's proximity to Crystal Airport, where the general aviation facility creates a unique neighborhood character and offers convenient access for private aircraft owners.
Skyway residents benefit from convenient Metro Transit route options along Bass Lake Road, providing reliable public transportation connections throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

A trail loop runs through the area, with boardwalks allowing visitors to traverse the marshy areas. The park also includes a baseball field for youth sports. Skyway Park is on the opposite side of the airport and features a playground, plus facilities for soccer and basketball. The city of Crystal has a pool and waterpark for residents to enjoy in the summer months, as well as plenty of cold-weather recreation such as skating rinks and sledding hills.
