Twin Oaks blends nature access with urban convenience

The community of Twin Oaks sits on the shores of the Twin Lakes chain on the north side of Crystal, a park-filled Minneapolis suburb. “Twin Oaks is very convenient because it’s off of a couple of highways – Highway 81 and Highway 100 – and very close to Downtown Minneapolis,” says Caleb Carlson, a real estate professional with Real Broker. “It’s by beautiful lakes, Twin Lakes and Crystal Lake, so you’re near a lot of nature, too.” The neighborhood is also central to schools, shopping and dining.

Outdoor recreation includes boating, fishing and sports

Twin Oaks Park features a basketball court, playground, hockey rink and walking trails. Officials installed a new POW/MIA Veteran’s Memorial on July 4th, 2025. Soo Line Park is smaller, offering a swing set and community garden. More recreation is on the lakefront.
Twin Lakes Shores has a paved trail and a dock on the western banks of the Middle Twin Lake, about a mile away. The Twin Lakes Boat Access area is on the west side of the Lower Twin Lake. For better fishing, boaters can follow a channel up to the Middle Lake. This boating area is right on the Twin Lakes Regional Trail, which links the Crystal Lake Regional Trail, an almost 9-mile paved stretch that runs along the west side of Twin Oaks. Residents can take the trail south to Lakeview Terrace Park, a sports center with a boat ramp on Crystal Lake, about 3 miles away.

Midcentury cottages and ranch homes on shady, grassy lots

Houses here don’t come on the market often, especially those on Upper Twin Lake. When there are listings, they’ll typically sell in under a month. Prices range from around $270,000 to almost $615,000. The neighborhood has a variety of vintage midcentury homes, including cottages and ranch-style houses. More contemporary properties include twin homes/duplexes and split-level residences.
The median lot size is under a quarter of an acre, offering broad, grassy front lawns shaded by mature maple, oak and pine trees. Lakeside houses tend to require flood insurance for federally backed mortgages. Crystal experiences mild summers with highs averaging around 80 degrees. Winters are cold and snowy, with lows averaging around 10 degrees and annual snowfall averaging over 50 inches.

Nearby Lakeview Elementary offers early IB and strong rating

Robbinsdale Area Schools has a B-minus on Niche and participates in Minnesota’s open enrollment program. Northport Elementary and Robbinsdale Middle both have C grades. Cooper High receives a C-plus. The middle and high schools offer the rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Parents who want their kid to start IB earlier can apply to the nearby Lakeview Elementary, graded A, which offers the IB Primary Years Programme.

Twin Oaks residents enjoy nearby restaurants and retail hubs

Although the neighborhood is sought-after for its proximity to downtown Minneapolis, another restaurant- and retail-rich city center is closer, Carlson says. “Twin Oaks is really close to Downtown Robbinsdale,” Carlson says. “It’s an extremely vibrant, growing and walkable area with breweries.” That area is a historic strip concentrated around a section of West Broadway about 2 miles away. Its red-brick sidewalks are lined with contemporary fast-favorites like Pig Ate My Pizza, a lively hangout featuring house-crafted brews, and Marna’s Eatery and Lounge, a Costa Rican restaurant with tropical ambiance and a killer brunch menu. Carlson recommends getting a reservation at Travail Kitchen and Amusements for a unique, upscale dining experience. That said, for day-to-day grocery, bank and gas station runs, folks don’t have to hit downtown. Bass Lake Road, which runs along the north side, is lined with shopping plazas. Stores just over a mile away include Aldi, Target and Supermercado y Panaderia LomaBonita.

Bus stops and highways offer easy access to downtown

Metro Transit bus stops are on Bass Lake Road. Minnesota Highway 100, a main leg of the commute to Downtown Minneapolis, is about 2 miles away. It connects to Interstate 394, a straight shot into downtown, about 7 miles away. The closest hospital is North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, about 3 miles away. Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is less than 25 miles away.
