Lakeside living without lakeside prices
Many Milwaukee suburbs along Lake Michigan are known for the high cost of living that comes with life on the water. Cudahy, a small city about 5 miles south of downtown Milwaukee, is a proud exception. “It’s starting to become one of the ‘it’ places,” says Katie Murphy, a Realtor with Shorewest Realtors who grew up in Cudahy. “People can’t afford Bay View or St. Francis, so Cudahy is becoming more of a desired area. … There are a lot of first-time homebuyers coming to the area because they understand how nice it is to be by the lake and have walkability.” Along with reduced home prices, Cudahy residents enjoy ample public lake access, immediate proximity to the airport and several in-town employment opportunities.

Nearly 400 acres of lakeside parkland
Cudahy has over 2 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline all to itself. Two sprawling parks occupy the city’s lakeside acreage. Sheridan Park takes visitors to the beach via a forested shoreline access trail. Its 130-plus acres also feature baseball and softball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, a public pool and a playground. The Oak Leaf Trail connects it to Warnimont Park to the south, which covers nearly 250 acres. Among its features are an 18-hole public golf course, an archery range, forested hiking paths, and a dog park with canine-friendly trails. Indoor recreation is available at several inland locations, including the Cudahy Family Library, which has operated for over a century. A few blocks away, South Shore Bowl has housed bowling lanes for all ages since 1925. Meanwhile, X-Ray Arcade hosts grownup-oriented live music while classic cabinet games keep patrons in touch with their inner kids.

From apartment-style condos to lake-adjacent lots
Over 17,000 people live in Cudahy, many on gridded, sidewalk-lined streets around the city’s parks, schools and business corridors. Properties are relatively compact, averaging about 1/6 acre. Single-family homes are modestly sized, too, typically hovering around 1,500 square feet. Many were built in the mid-1900s, including Colonial Revivals and many ranch-style homes. Some bungalows have stood since before World War II. Two-story and apartment-style condominiums are also available, as well as duplexes from various periods. The average Cudahy home is worth just under $250,000, on par with the rest of the Milwaukee area. Prices for turnkey homes start in the mid-$100,000s for one-bedroom condos under 1,000 square feet. A few properties sit within view of the lake and can cost up to the mid-$600,000s for four bedrooms and nearly 3,000 square feet.

Serving prime rib (and volleyballs) since 1958
Most of Cudahy’s businesses line Packard and Layton avenues, which intersect in the northern part of town. However, one of the community’s staple restaurants, Joe’s “K” Ranch, sits out of the way on Whitnall Avenue. Since 1958, this spacious, unpretentious pub has served locally renowned prime rib, conducted Friday fish fries and kept drinks flowing at the bar. It also invites customers to enjoy friendly competition on its outdoor volleyball and horseshoe courts or lounge in its beer garden. Other nearby eateries include La Crema, which serves breakfast and lunch specialties from chilaquiles to stuffed French toast in a sleek, plant-covered dining room. A few blocks south, Twisted Plants serves vegan burgers named after popular…um, plant-themed films like “The Big Lebowski” and “Pineapple Express.” Though Cudahy no longer has a grocery store, major retailers like Pick ‘n Save and Walmart Supercenter operate just outside the city limits.

A colorful Independence Day celebration
Cudahy’s annual Fourth of July celebration starts with a colorful kids’ bike parade. “It drops you right at the pool area in Sheridan Park, followed by a community get-together,” Murphy says. In 2024, this gathering will feature hours of live music, games and food before concluding with a fireworks display.
