A rustic Maine suburb with convenient access to Portland

A laidback, rustic atmosphere meets suburban convenience in Cumberland Center, which acts as the centralized gathering space for the town of Cumberland. The neighborhood hosts most of the town’s businesses and amenities along Main Street, including Cumberland’s public schools, the library and local restaurants. “It’s a professional community with rustic charm, good schools and great access to the city of Portland,” says Mary Conroy, associate broker with Portside Real Estate Group, who has served southern Maine for eight years. Though residents often commute out of town, they will find frequent community gatherings and plenty of outdoor spaces in Cumberland Center.

Dara Bistro is a coffee shop by day and an elevated dinner spot by night

There aren’t many shops in the neighborhood, but the Hannaford in Yarmouth is 5 miles east and stocks groceries and daily essentials. Cumberland Center isn’t far from a variety of retail options either — the Freeport outlets are located 10 miles north, and South Portland’s Maine Mall is 14 miles south. Residents don’t need to travel far to go out to eat since there is a collection of local eateries along Main Street. Dara Bistro serves coffee and pastries in the morning and up-scale American dishes for dinner in the evening. Rise Pizza and Pub offers specialty pizzas and burgers, and residents can find fresh cider, pies and produce from local vendors at Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards.

Sample fresh apple cider at Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards

Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards hosts a roadside farm stand with apples and baked goods throughout the fall, but it also offers free samples of seasonal treats in September on Maine Apple Sunday. Also in September is the Cumberland County Fair, which features food stands and carnival games. The fair hosts a pig scramble for the neighborhood’s children, where they can capture and then raise their own pig before selling it at the fair’s auction a few years later. “It teaches kids about the daily work of farming, as well as the business side of agriculture. It gives them an appreciation of the full circle,” Conroy says. The Prince Memorial Library hosts recurring community events, including story walks and teen book groups.

Disc golf at the Twin Brook Recreation Area and traditional golf at Val Halla Golf

Twin Brook Recreation Area is a go-to outdoor spot featuring 4 miles of forested nature trails and mixed athletic fields. Youth sports regularly meet on the soccer and baseball fields, and residents can try out disc golf at the park’s nine-hole course. During the colder months, residents can still get fresh air on the nature trails, which are groomed for cross-country skiing during the winter. Golfers swing over to Val Halla Golf and Recreation, an 18-hole course that also features tennis courts and an on-site restaurant. Kids can learn how to golf at the course’s junior summer camps. The neighborhood is coming together to create a free-to-pick community orchard, and residents can get involved with planning and workdays.

Walk to the library along Main Street or merge onto Interstate 295

Sidewalks along Main Street make the area walkable for those living along or near the road. However, most depend on personal vehicles to run errands in nearby towns and commute to work. Interstate 295 forms the neighborhood’s eastern edge and travels 12 miles south to Portland and 10 miles north to Freeport.
