Cumberland Center provides small-town charm near the coast

In Cumberland Center, locals enjoy a laid-back, rustic atmosphere just 10 minutes from suburban conveniences and the shoreline. Located in the town of Cumberland, the neighborhood has a rural, spread-out feel even though it's the site of the town’s small commercial scene. It’s the kind of place where you know your neighbors by name, and you’re likely to run into someone you know on a trip to the local store. Winding country roads are bordered by pine and spruce trees, and the city amenities of Downtown Portland are less than 10 miles away.

What housing styles and price points homebuyers can expect

Quiet pockets of classic New England homes make up most of the housing stock here. Houses are closer together than in adjacent rural neighborhoods, but most still have spacious yards framed by pine trees. Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals are common, with some newer homes on the south side of the neighborhood featuring modern craftsman architecture. Close to the center of the community, homes are mostly on quarter-to-half-acre lots, while some houses on the outskirts of town have over 5 acres. Homes in the area tend to be more expensive compared to other Cumberland County communities like Gray and New Gloucester, with more luxury builds and high-square-footage properties. Homes here start in the mid $300,000s and reach around $1.6 million.

District 51 public schools and a community library

Maine School Administrative District 51 serves local families and is one of the highest-rated districts in the state. “The school district is one of the biggest draws to Cumberland,” says Ingrid Vanni, a local and Realtor with Portside Real Estate Group. “It’s ranked highly in the state, and the high school has an International Baccalaureate program, which is rare in Maine.” Mabel I. Wilson School, Greely Middle School 4-5, Greely Middle School 6-8 and Greely High School sit next to each other in the center of the neighborhood, and most residents live within a two-mile drive of the schools. The Prince Memorial Library is around a half mile away and offers community resources and a variety of events, from book clubs and art workshops to kids’ story times and a weekly knitting club.

Outdoor recreation includes parks, golf and access to the coast

Wooded recreation areas and athletic facilities are all located in town, while Casco Bay is around 4 miles southeast. When it comes to enjoying time outdoors, you have options:

  • The Val Halla Golf Course is a public, 18-hole course complete with a clubhouse and an indoor golf simulator.
  • The Twin Brook Recreation Area has soccer fields, baseball diamonds and walking trails.
  • Rines Forest is a 270-acre natural area and offers hiking trails and creek-side fishing.
  • Broad Cove Reserve is a 10-minute drive away and has a sandy bayside beach.
“The Broad Cove Reserve is just for town locals,” says Vanni. “If you want a bigger beach, you can take the drive south to Old Orchard. Broad Cove is quieter, with a little pier and a kayak storage area that you can enter a lottery to use.”

A quaint commercial district with restaurants and shops

There’s a small business district near the center of town. “If you live in Cumberland Center, you’re within a short walk of the town’s shops and restaurants,” Vanni says. Dara Bistro serves breakfast and coffee in the mornings and offers a pre-selected dinner service on select evenings. On Main Street, Cumberland Food Stop offers a selection of wine, snacks and groceries, and makes made-to-order pizza, sandwiches and burgers. For a larger selection of essentials, you can take the short drive to Hannaford in the nearby town of Yarmouth. Nearby, Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards hosts a roadside farm stand with apples and baked goods throughout the fall months.

What you need to know about winter living in Cumberland Center

Most Maine locals are accustomed to cold winters with a lot of snowfall. If you are new to the region, here’s what you should know about winter living in the Cumberland area:

  • The town gets an average of around 70 inches of snowfall each year, which is slightly higher than Portland due to its distance from the coast.
  • The Town of Cumberland Public Works Department maintains most of the neighborhood’s roads during snowstorms, including plowing, clearing sidewalks and salting the main roads.
  • Overnight parking on main roads is prohibited from mid-November to early April to allow plows to clear the area.
  • The town provides free winter sand to residents each year.

Driving to Portland and other nearby cities

Downtown Portland is around 10 miles south via Maine state Route 9, while Interstate 95 offers direct access to nearby cities like Portsmouth and Lewiston. Portland International Jetport is roughly 12 miles away for long-distance travel. For Amtrak’s Downeaster line, there are stations in both Portland and Freeport.
