Cumberland County Fair fun in September and pastoral tranquility year-round
Home to the Cumberland County Fairgrounds, West Cumberland is a hub for harness racing, cattle shows and pumpkin weigh-offs during the last week of September. However, the area maintains a different vibe throughout the rest of the year. “It’s quiet, easy living,” says Mary Conroy, an associate broker at Portside Real Estate Group who has sold several homes in the area. “Houses are on huge plots, even if it’s not farmland. It feels secluded, but you’re still near Casco Bay and 20 minutes from Portland.” Acres of conservation land make this area ideal for hikers and access to highways like Interstate 95 means other Main metros are just a quick drive away.

Colonial Revival estates, sprawling Cape Cods and Forest Lake properties
West Cumberland’s winding roads are brimming with custom-built country estates on 4-to-10-acre parcels. 1980s Colonial Revivals have apple orchards and wide-open pastures enclosed by white picket fences. Long driveways lead to sprawling Cape Cods tucked behind evergreen forests. Dwellings built within the last five years are typically modern farmhouses with four to five bedrooms. Midcentury cottages and modest ranch styles surround Forest Lake, where only residents can swim, fish and boat from their docks. Buying in West Cumberland can cost between $500,000 and $800,000, a range in the same ballpark as a Maine home’s average $500,000 selling price.

Modern fair amenities and agricultural influences at the Cumberland County Fair
“The Cumberland County Fair has classic Carnival stuff, like games and a Ferris wheel,” says Conroy. “But the agriculture displays are what make it unique.” Since 1868, the fair has combined rural Maine events with modern entertainment. Attendees can watch daily ox pulls on the racetrack or catch a blues band on the main stage. With 20th-century walking tractors and antique tillage tools, the Farm Museum appeals to historians and agriculturists. The Exhibition Hall hosts an apple pie bake-off, a canned goods competition and a needleworking workshop. A fireworks show on Saturday night concludes the event.
Miles of hiking trails, country club proximity and easy Casco Bay access
Spanning 268 acres of Cumberland terrain, Rines Forest off Range Road provides hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers with several trails, many of which pass by cascading waterfalls. Those trekking the 2-mile loop at Hurricane Valley Farm on Schuster Road will pass buckwheat fields, a community garden and a greenhouse. A less than half-mile hike along Knights Pond Preserve’s boardwalk path leads to its namesake pond, where ice skaters will find ample activity throughout the winter. The Falmouth Country Club on Congressional Drive is less than 5 miles from the area, offering members an 18-hole golf course and a tennis facility featuring clay courts and grass options. For a day on Casco Bay, public beach access is only 6 miles east at 23-acre Broad Cove Reserve. It also has a 2-mile trail system and a pier for striped bass fishing or kayak launching.

Easy access to State Route 26 and Interstate 95
Rural roads and a lack of public transportation options make West Cumberland car-dependent. State Route 26 spans the area, and a 12-mile drive south on thoroughfare reaches Portland’s core. Drivers can hop on Interstate 95 to get to other Maine cities, like Lewiston, only 25 miles north. The nearest Amtrak station is 13 miles away in Freeport, and Yarmouth has a Chebeague Island ferry service 11 miles east on Wharf Road.
