“The Cumberland County Fair has classic Carnival stuff, like games and a Ferris wheel,” says Conroy. “But the agriculture displays are what make it unique.” Since 1868, the fair has combined rural Maine events with modern entertainment. Attendees can watch daily ox pulls on the racetrack or catch a blues band on the main stage. With 20th-century walking tractors and antique tillage tools, the Farm Museum appeals to historians and agriculturists. The Exhibition Hall hosts an apple pie bake-off, a canned goods competition and a needleworking workshop. A fireworks show on Saturday night concludes the event.
Miles of hiking trails, country club proximity and easy Casco Bay access
Spanning 268 acres of Cumberland terrain, Rines Forest off Range Road provides hikers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers with several trails, many of which pass by cascading waterfalls. A less than half-mile hike along Knights Pond Preserve’s boardwalk path leads to its namesake pond, where ice skaters will find ample activity throughout the winter. The Falmouth Country Club on Congressional Drive is less than 5 miles from the area, offering members an 18-hole golf course and a tennis facility featuring clay courts and grass options. For a day on Casco Bay, public beach access is only 6 miles east at 23-acre Broad Cove Reserve. It also has a 2-mile trail system and a pier for striped bass fishing or kayak launching.
