Monastery Heights
Neighborhood in Cumberland, Rhode Island
Providence County 02864
Established midcentury suburbs with some spacious lots
Sloping, wooded streets weave through Monastery Heights, branching off into neat rows flanked by telephone poles and broad-canopied oaks. This neighborhood has an established feel, with ranch-style and split-level homes from the 1960s and ‘70s and some even older cottages. While these homes typically have large lawns, some New Traditional homes in newer subdivisions sit on narrower plots. Millennium Mansions and farmhouse-inspired new construction homes tend to have a half-acre or more. Prices start around $300,000 and can climb to $850,000, while houses with over an acre of land list at nearly $1 million. The median price, however, is roughly $485,000. Monastery Heights has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Hiking trails and a library on the grounds of a former abbey
Currently the site of the Cumberland Public Library, the historic grounds of the Cumberland Monastery date back to 1902 as a Trappist abbey. After the monastery was damaged in a 1950 fire, the monks moved to Saint Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, leaving the old monastery to be rebuilt and turned into the town library. Nowadays, it also houses the Cumberland Senior Center and the Mayor’s Office of Children, Youth and Learning, both of which provide programming and classes. Beyond the library’s walls, the monastery grounds are covered by a network of wooded trails now used for hiking through meadowland fields, past trickling creeks and through a former quarry. “There are some monuments along the trails, like Nine Men’s Misery,” Jablonski says. “Nine colonists were tortured and killed there by a Native American tribe in the 1600s. It’s sort of dark, but it just goes to show how much history there is.” Tales of the Monastery’s long past have spawned theories of its haunting, a rumor that the library has playfully indulged with its “Nightmare at the Monastery” haunted house. Other events include Music at the Monastery, a summer concert series that brings local bands to the Monastery’s grounds.Tailored career prep pathways at Cumberland High
The Cumberland School Department serves Monastery Heights, with Garvin Memorial Elementary within walking distance of some homes. Niche scores the elementary school a B-plus, while Joseph L. McCourt Middle receives a B grade. Cumberland High earns a B-plus and offers state-accredited career and technical education programs with opportunities to receive college credit or industry certifications. The high school also provides additional learning pathways with coursework tailored to specific fields such as writing and literature, government and visual arts.Commute to Boston or Providence from I-295
Interstate 295 passes through Monastery Heights’ northern end, putting commuters about 15 miles from Providence and 45 miles from Boston. Public transit is limited in this car-dependent suburb, though Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses stop on Mendon Road. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority also operates a commuter rail from Boston to Providence, with park-and-ride stops in Attleboro, South Attleboro and Pawtucket/Central Falls. The rail also has a stop at Rhode Island T.F. Green Airport, which is the nearest international airport, located just south of Providence. The closest hospital is Landmark Medical Center, approximately 10 miles from Monastery Heights.Rhode Island-based chains and local restaurants on Diamond Hill Road
Near the northern end of the neighborhood is Dave’s Fresh Marketplace, a grocery store local to Rhode Island. Other regional New England chains, such as Marylou’s Coffee and Honey Dew Donuts, are also nearby. Farther down Diamond Hill Road is La Familia Restaurant, a beloved Italian eatery that puts a Portuguese twist on its dishes. “La Familia has three locations between Rhode Island and Massachusetts now,” says Patty Tinnell, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite who sells homes in Cumberland. “The gentleman who opened it used to be a chef at Luciano’s, which is one of the best restaurants around. He left to open La Familia and now it’s very well-known, and all the dishes there are very good.” Ollie’s Diner is another local favorite for its breakfast platters served in a familiar down-home atmosphere and sits just across the street from Josie’s Ice Cream, a seasonally open spot for soft serve or sundaes. Emerald Square Mall is about 5 miles east across the Massachusetts border and is anchored by department stores such as JCPenney and Macy’s.
