Living in Cupertino
North Cupertino is an office-centric suburb home to Apple Park, the headquarters of the world-renowned tech giant behind the iPhone. “Apple is what put Cupertino on the map,” says Jane Shen, a Realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate Sereno and a longtime resident of Cupertino. “This city used to be more of a sleepy town – back in the 70s, IBM and Hewlett Packard were the big tech companies.” With proximity to the nearby Santa Cruz foothills, residents in this neighborhood can enjoy the great outdoors year-round because of the area’s Mediterranean-like climate. Although Cupertino doesn’t have a designated downtown area, plenty of restaurants, shops and small businesses line Stevens Creek Boulevard, which runs through the middle of the city. Students in this neighborhood are zoned for the Cupertino Union School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche.

The 'Apple Spaceship' and Steve Jobs Theater
One of the most significant aspects of North Cupertino is the 176-acre Apple Park office complex; in 2017, the new tech company headquarters opened, with the cost of construction estimated at around $5 billion. The main building is often called the Apple Spaceship, primarily because of its circular shape and futuristic glass-covered exterior. Although most of the tech campus is off-limits to non-employees, the public is still welcome to check out the Apple Visitors Center right next door. The campus’ Steve Jobs Theater hosts special events against a stunning architectural and natural backdrop. In addition to Apple, the city of Cupertino is home to dozens of other tech companies and start-up ventures contributing to a strong job market. Other major headquarters for companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Facebook are all less than 10 miles from the neighborhood.

Housing styles in Silicon Valley
Stately homes with ornate designs and large lots share North Cupertino’s streets with Spanish-style townhouses, ranch-style properties and homes with Mediterranean-inspired architecture. Homes throughout the city are highly desirable and typically don’t last long on the market: “In most parts of the country, spring is the peak season for homebuying – but in Cupertino, that “peak season” is year-round,” Shen says. “Homes are almost always gone within a week of being listed.” Single-family homes vary in price between approximately $2 million and $4 million; homes between $4 million and $5 million typically boast larger square footage and more intricate, Mediterranean-style touches. However, not all buyers are purchasing for the existing property: “Some people will buy homes here just to tear down the property and start building their own home from scratch on the empty lot,” Shen says. Contemporary-style condo units and townhouses can range from around $900,000 to $2 million.

Restaurants and shops along Stevens Creek Boulevard
Most daily shopping needs can be met along Stevens Creek Boulevard, a commercial artery home to national retailers like Target and Whole Foods. It also has many restaurants, including the regional brunch shop Sweet Maple and Dish N Dash, a Bay Area favorite for Middle Eastern cuisine. Before work, scores of tech employees stop by Philz Coffee for their morning caffeine boost. Cupertino Village is a shopping center opposite the street from Apple Park – it features Ranch Market supermarket, several salons and wellness stores, restaurants, cafes and bakeries, most of which specialize in authentic Asian foods.

Approximately 5 miles west of the neighborhood is the Rancho San Antonio County Park & Open Space, where locals often go for weekend adventures. “Rancho San Antonio has miles and miles of gorgeous hiking trails,” Shen says. “And Santa Cruz Beach is only a 30 to 40-minute drive away.”

Annual city-wide garage sale
Many yearly events, such as Shakespeare in the Park and the Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival, take place at the Cupertino Memorial Park and its on-site amphitheater. Shen says that the residents of Cupertino also celebrate a unique tradition during the fall season: “There’s a massive annual garage sale in September – it’s gotten so popular that the city now gives out a map of which places are hosting sales,” she says.
