Oak Valley offers nature trails and well-rated schools
Oak Valley is a small community at the northwestern tip of Cupertino. Through traffic is relatively limited, which gives the area a somewhat secluded feel, although it is just a few miles from Silicon Valley’s many tech companies. For families, the neighborhood’s biggest draw tends to be its highly rated public schools, says Mary Tan, a Realtor with Compass who has lived in the region since 1982, although that's not the only reason homebuyers are interested. “It’s a really nice area," Tan says. "You’re close to city life, but it’s in the hills, so there are lots of walking trails. On the weekends, you’ll see a lot of people out biking.”
Public schools include Monta Vista High School
Children are served by the Cupertino Union School District from elementary through middle school. Oak Valley residents are typically assigned to either Montclaire or Stevens Creek elementary schools, which both receive A ratings from Niche. Students can continue learning at A-minus-rated John F. Kennedy Middle School. The district also allows for open enrollment, and placement is determined by an annual lottery.
Monta Vista High School, rated an A-plus, is part of the Fremont Union High School District. In both 2008 and 2014, Monta Vista High was named a U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School.
Planned upscale subdivisions and some multifamily options
From the 1990s to the early 2000s, developers converted sections of the land to the west of the railroad tracks into high-end residential subdivisions. Tan says that the developers even consulted with her to ensure their designs aligned with feng shui principles. The subdivisions feature a mix of architecture, including Craftsman, Spanish and shingle styles. A few were built as attached homes, but the majority of the subdivision consists of detached, single-family residences. Lots tend to be fairly large and professionally landscaped. Homes in this portion of Oak Valley rarely come on the market, and in recent years, only one attached house sold for just over $2 million. The eastern portion of Oak Valley has a blend of late 1900s single-family houses and multifamily communities. Most properties have off-street parking, keeping the curving streets and cul-de-sacs relatively free of cars. Single-family sales may range from around $2.82 million to $4.6 million. Townhouses generally cost between $1.36 million and $1.93 million, plus monthly HOA fees of about $400 to $500. Some homes are located near electrical substations or train tracks. The area's CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.
Hiking trails and playgrounds help Oak Park residents stay active
There are more than 25 miles of trails in the Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve, which covers the hills to the west of the community. Some trails are open to horseback riding, and Whispering Creek Stables offers horse boarding. There are two small neighborhood parks with playgrounds, and Monta Vista Park, a few blocks south, features tennis courts and ball fields. Other nearby recreation spaces include Blackberry Farm, a city park with pools and a nine-hole golf course.
Trader Joe’s and local restaurants are a short drive away
The community is a short drive from the Foothill Crossing Shopping Center, which has a Trader Joe’s, an Ace Hardware and the Red Pepper Bar and Grill. Blue Pheasant Restaurant, known for its prime rib, rests beside the Blackberry Farm Golf Course, and the walkable Main Street Cupertino shopping district is less than 5 miles east.
Some bike lanes and bus stops, and I-280 is close
Streets on the eastern part of Oak Valley link directly with North Foothill Boulevard, and Cristo Rey Drive is the primary route into the western portion of the community. There’s an entrance to Interstate 280 directly north of the neighborhood, and Valley Transportation Authority buses stop along North Foothill Boulevard. Bike lanes line some area roads, so “people can bike to work if they want, but most people take their cars,” Tan says. Apple Park is about 5 miles east, and Google’s corporate offices are roughly 10 miles north. El Camino Health-Mountain View Hospital is under 5 miles away, and San Jose Mineta International Airport is within a 15-mile drive.
Future cleanup plans for the nearby quarry and cement plant
Oak Valley is located near the Heidelberg Materials cement plant and Permanente Quarry. Environmental groups and local government agencies have raised concerns over potential air and water pollution from the operations. The site has a large open pit that was used for mining limestone and other rock. The cement plant shut down in 2023 and is slated for demolition. Efforts to restore Permanente Creek are underway.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
