Cypress Lake offers a quieter lifestyle and an array of golf courses

Centered around several golf courses and across two dozen ponds, Cypress Lake offers a quieter lifestyle just 7 miles from downtown Fort Myers in southwest Florida. Locals here enjoy a host of nifty amenities under the Sunshine State's palm-laden streets, from strong schools and acclaimed eateries to community parks and shopping options. "We have Rutenberg Park. We have a bunch of shops and dining. There’s a library. Golfers book tee times at Cypress Lake Golf Club

Golf is king in Cypress Lakes, and locals can hit the green at several courses including Golfview Golf & Racquet Club, Myerlee Country Club and Cypress Lake Golf Club, which has been an area favorite since the early 1960s. Athletes of all ages flock to Rutenberg Park to play tennis or watch their children run the bases. Meanwhile, lovers of the outdoors frequent Lakes Park to kayak or hike along its network of trails. Due to alligators lurking in the water, however, swimming is not advised. Lakes Park also offers a playground, splash pad and the Railroad Museum of South Florida, which features mile-long rides on its miniature locomotive. For live entertainment, Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall and Suncoast Credit Union Arena at the Florida SouthWestern State College campus feature musicals, concerts and dance performances.

McGregor Boulevard connects residents to downtown Fort Myers

Cypress Lake locals are largely car-dependent, though they can catch a ride on the LeeTran bus, which includes stops along Winkler Road and Cypress Lake Drive. To get to downtown Fort Myers, many travel north on Winkler and merge onto McGregor Boulevard, which feeds directly into the city center. Residents can also dock at Freedom Boat Club or fly out of Southwest Florida International Airport, which sits 13 miles east. "I’d say it’s close proximity to everything,” Lipsher says. "It’s 20 minutes to downtown Fort Myers, 20 minutes to the beach and 20 minutes to the airport."

Residents are wary during hurricane season

Stationed on Florida's Gulf Coast, Cypress Lake is routinely threatened by major storms during hurricane season. Much of Southwest Florida was ravaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022, and while many homes and local businesses have been rebuilt, it's not uncommon to still see buildings with major structural damage.
