Community pride defines “the Grove”
Since its inception, Pleasant Grove has marched to the beat of its own drum. Until it was annexed into Dallas in 1954, “the Grove,” was an independent town named for its beautiful cottonwood trees. Pleasant Grove’s hardworking residents are engaged in multiple volunteer organizations and assist with organizing neighborhood celebrations. “There’s a lot of community events here and in Prairie Creek. Recreation centers have big programs, like Easter Programs or the Martin Luther King Day parade,” says Lucy Benitez, the public service specialist at Pleasant Grove Branch Library. Jaime Resendez, a Dallas City Council representative and Pleasant Grove native, has overseen multiple development programs for the neighborhood, including a local Workforce Solutions Office to help locals find employment. Alongside easily accessible public transportation, neighborhood beautification projects and education opportunities for residents of all ages, Pleasant Grove has plenty of support for those who call the community home.
Pleasant Grove streets made beautiful by volunteers
Many homes in Pleasant Grove are older builds, with most properties constructed between the 1950s and 1980s. The most common residences are bungalows or ranch-style homes with brick or stone detailing, which cost between $200,000 and $400,000. Several properties have covered porches or patios, and many homeowners use this outdoor space to set up tables and chairs under the shade of neighborhood oak and spruce trees. Anyone driving through one of Pleasant Grove’s many subdivisions might also see volunteers working on local beautification projects, such as cleaning up litter or restoring old homes. Northwest Park has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6, slightly higher than the national average score of 4.
