West Dallas offers a mix of vintage charm and modern convenience

West Dallas is a burgeoning artistic enclave that offers a beautiful blend of modern convenience and historic charm. Residential streets host vintage cottages alongside striking new builds and commercial areas are adorned with colorful murals. Bordered by the Trinity River, residents here enjoy proximity to hip eateries, entertainment venues, parks, and downtown. “It does have a vibrant community atmosphere. You can see the skyline and you’re close to so many restaurants and so much to do. It appeals to people of all ages. It’s family-friendly and then you have your nightlife, so it appeals to a lot of different age groups,” says Lucy Knox, a Realtor with Keller Williams Lonestar DFW and a longtime area resident. “It’s a cool place to live, and it's changed so much in the last five years. The city of Dallas, especially the downtown area, has really undergone a revitalization.”

Grab a bite to eat at Trinity Groves

Trinity Groves, a 15-acre marketplace on Singleton Boulevard that hosts multiple businesses and an art park showcasing the works of local artists, serves as a hub for dining and entertainment. A night out there could be spent meeting up with friends for creative cocktails at 440 Rattler Bar or playing classic arcade games and chucking axes next door at Lone Star Axe Throwing. Popular eateries include Soirée Coffee Bar for its Sunday Brunch with live music, and Beto & Son, a father-and-son-run Mexican eatery.

A grocery run can be easily handled at small independents like Cox Farms Market on Fort Worth Avenue, and for a larger selection, there’s an Aldi, located just south of West Dallas on the same road.

West Dallas’ curb appeal

West Dallas offers an eclectic mix of the best of classic and contemporary architectural styles. Here, 1930s brick and clapboard bungalows sit alongside bright white, asymmetrical modern designs. Compact fenced-in lots typically rest along walkable sidewalk-lined streets.

Home prices start in the low-$200,000s for small fixer-uppers and can run well over $1 million for a sprawling new build. How quickly homes can vary wildly depending on price, condition, location and sought-after amenities like garages that help keep cars cool in the Texas heat. “The average days-on-market is 66 and that’s because there’s such a wide price range,” Knox says.

West Dallas has a “high crime” score of 9 out of 10, according to the CAP Index. For perspective, the nation’s crime score is a four.

Art Walk West is a beloved tradition

Every October, residents look forward to Art Walk West. The event, sponsored by the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce, features a self-guided walking and driving tour of public art murals, art galleries and studios around West Dallas with live music along the way.

Get your steps in at Trinity Skyline Trail

Outdoor options abound in West Dallas. Strolling or biking along the 5-mile Trinity Skyline Trail, residents have cityscape and river views. Fish Trap Lake Park, on Toronto Street, offers a lake for catfish and bass fishing. And at Mattie Nash-Myrtle Davis Park, on North Hampton Road, locals can play a game of tennis, shoot some hoops or cool off on the splash pad during the summer months.

Hop on Interstate 30 East to get downtown

The neighborhood offers easy access to Interstate 30 and following it 5 miles east leads straight to downtown. Popular entertainment options in the area include the Dallas World Aquarium and the Dallas Museum of Art, which is one of the country’s largest art museums with 24,000 pieces on display. “West Dallas is more residential and then you’re close to downtown,” Knox says. “People want to be close to downtown because there’s so much to do. It’s like an 8-minute drive to downtown. It’s just over the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.”

To avoid the hassle of driving, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit hosts bus stops along Singleton Boulevard that connect to the greater Metroplex.

Pinkston High preps students for the future

Students of West Dallas can apply to attend schools of their choice. Nearby options include Jesus Moroles Expressive Arts Vanguard for prekindergarten through eighth grade and L.G. Pinkston High School. Part of the Dallas Independent School District, the elementary and middle school earns a B Niche grade, while the high school scores a C. In addition to a traditional curriculum, Pinkston also offers an H-TECH program, where students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree tuition-free while in high school.
