Serramonte is Daly City's downtown
Since its development in the 1960s, Serramonte has served as Daly City’s downtown retail hub. This bustling neighborhood is bordered on three sides by highways and features one of the region’s largest malls, the Serramonte Center. Beyond this busy atmosphere, however, lay hundreds of colorful tract homes lining hilly streets and offering commanding views of the Coast Ranges. “It’s one of the Bay Area’s most cost-effective neighborhoods, as costs are lower there because of the weather,” says Realtor MaryAnn Cruz with Corcoran Icon Properties. “It’s also convenient to travel into San Francisco for work, but the main attraction would be getting to the beach.”
Serramonte streets are lined with tightly arranged single-family homes.

Shopping at the center of Serramonte
When Bay Area residents hear the name “Serramonte,” they will likely think of the shopping center that has existed almost as long as the neighborhood has. The Serramonte Center, located near the junction of State Route 1 and Interstate 280, has been a retail powerhouse since 1968, undergoing expansion even as recently as 2021. This mall is a one-stop shop for living needs and luxuries alike. Conveniences like Target and a dozen clothing stores share a complex with eateries, cosmetics stores and jewelry shops. Restaurants like the Filipino-themed Jollibee and the dim-sum venue, Koi Palace are at the mall. Every week, the Daly City Farmers Market comes to the Serramonte Center and sells fresh produce, flowers, tacos and tamales. Across the street from the mall, a Sprouts Farmers Market offers grocery essentials, as does Fairmont’s Safeway.
The Serramonte Center holds many restaurant options, like Mod Pizza.
Popular national brands can be found at the Serramonte Center, such as Old Navy.

Indoor and outdoor recreation in Serramonte
Serramonte may not touch either the Pacific Ocean, which is 2 miles away or San Bruno Mountain, over 5 miles away, but parks varying from athletic facilities to tot lots offer local outdoor recreation. Gellert Park forms the green heart of Serramonte, and it has three baseball fields, a large soccer pitch, a playground and courts for basketball and tennis. Smaller playgrounds like the Norwood Tot Lot often feature their own basketball courts and play areas. Daly City’s unique weather patterns not only appeal to homebuyers, but also make outdoor recreation more enjoyable. “Daly City is one of the coolest cities in the Bay Area, temperature-wise,” Cruz says. “It does get foggy there quite often, and people like the cooler temperatures.” At the neighborhood’s southern end, the Classic Bowling Center offers an indoor alternative to outdoor sports. Not only does this venue have bowling, but it also has arcade games and a sports bar.

"Little Boxes" line hillside streets
First developed in the 1960s, Serramonte features the tract housing that made Daly City the subject of a satirical 1960s song, “Little Boxes.” These box-shaped homes line hillside streets, and though they may share similar designs, they vary in color and size. Serramonte’s homes range in price from $885,000 to $1.5 million, with square footage contributing to home values. Each home has a driveway, a small front lawn and sidewalk access.

"It’s very convenient to get to shopping, restaurants and the freeway, so it could be 15 minutes to San Francisco and the airport,” Cruz says. “It’s also about 20 minutes to the Pacific Ocean." Interstate 280 and Highway 101 each provide access to downtown San Francisco within a 10-mile journey, while commuters can also utilize Daly City’s SamTrans bus lines or neighboring Colma’s BART station.
