About 700 people live in rural Dalzell, once a coal mining town
The Village of Dalzell got its start in the early 1900s as the No. 5 Mine Camp. Subsequently, it was named for Samuel M. Dalzell, the manager of the Spring Valley Coal Company. The mine closed in 1923. Spring Creek runs through Dalzell, and the banks of the Illinois River are about 5 miles to the south. Dalzell is mostly in Bureau County, though it's partially in LaSalle County. The land is rural, with many farms and fields. According to U.S. Census estimates, the village has a population of about 700.
Neighboring Peru to the east and Spring Valley to the west have populations of about 9,900 and 5,500, respectively. "Dalzell is basically just like a tiny, tiny little offshoot of Spring Valley and Peru," says Beth Coleman-Weger, a broker with Local Realty Group Inc. The area has also a history of racially based conflict. Continuing into the 20th century, Spring Valley, Peru and LaSalle were known as Sundown Towns, which were racially discriminatory municipalities that warned non-whites to leave before sunset.

Early 1900s to 2000s homes in the $100,000s to $300,000s
Some of Dalzell's oldest homes are from the early 1900s and modestly sized: less than 1,000 square feet. From the mid-20th century on, ranch-style and split-level homes were popular. The Blakely Estates subdivision has 1990s and 2000s ranch-style and contemporary homes with attached multicar garages on large lots. Prices typically range from about $110,000 to $325,000, depending on age and condition.
Although not common, tornadoes are a possibility in the region.

Events and a club at the nearby Illinois Valley Regional Airport
East of Dalzell is the Illinois Valley Regional Airport, which is owned by the city of Peru. It's a general aviation and public-use facility, so the number of flights causing noise or flyovers is limited. The airport is buzzing in May during the TBM Avenger Reunion, which includes an airshow and the Salute to Veterans Parade. Displays of WWII-era planes and other aircraft, a concert, food and a beer garden are among the other highlights. The Illinois Valley Flying Club hosts various events at the airport, such as the Fall Fly-in Breakfast and a springtime airplane wash-and-wax social.

The Peru Mall has over a dozen businesses, including retail stores and casual eateries, an AMC movie theater and the Insanity Haunted House, which is open for the Halloween season. Southwest of Dalzell, Spring Valley has more businesses, including independently owned restaurants like Verucchi's Ristorante, which opened in 1914.
