Danville, the county seat of Hendricks County, Indiana, has a population of just over 10,000 people and was founded in 1824. This town lies to the west of Indianapolis and its motto is “A Great Place to Spend an Hour or a Lifetime.”

With streets branching off the town’s Main Street, US Route 36, Danville covers nearly seven square miles and is bordered by White Lick Creek. Danville streets don’t guarantee sidewalks, but the quiet roads have residential speed limits in place, making it a safe place to walk the dog. “Danville is a charming town that’s currently experiencing a massive growth spurt, with four new subdivisions being built and more on the way,” says Debbie Konter, a realtor with F.C. Tucker Company and longtime Danville resident. “Many people moved here in recent years from Indianapolis as their jobs went remote, so we’ve seen huge population growth.” Houses in Danville span a wide array of styles, including modern colonial-revival-inspired custom builds, cottages, bungalows and ranches. There is also the option of purchasing land and designing a custom-built house for those who are looking for a specific style. Houses here range in price from $200,000 to $500,000, with the median listing home price hovering around $375,000.

Students growing up in Danville can enroll in the Danville Community School Corporation, which is ranked by Niche as the fifth-best school district in Hendricks County. A student may attend South Elementary School, rated B-plus by Niche, Danville Middle School, rated A-minus, and Danville Community High School, rated B. This high school offers AP classes, a gifted program and a student-teacher ratio of 17 to 1.

After school and work, head to Ellis Park for afternoon fun. This local spot has a covered picnic area, a gazebo, barbeque pits and a playground ready for locals to explore. Ellis Park also hosts an annual light show for a community celebration during the December holiday season. “One of our biggest festivals, Winterland, lights up the town with holiday lights and decorations. It makes the town square look like a scene from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ and people come from neighboring towns as part of their holiday celebrations,” says Konter.

During warmer months, enjoy weekly farmer’s markets in the town square. “Danville is a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon,” Konter says. “You can get your produce at the Farmer’s Market, then go shopping at the mom-and-pop boutiques in the town center. Afterward, head to the Bread Basket for their famous cinnamon roll French toast.” The Bread Basket Café and Bakery, established in 2005, was featured in People magazine for its well-regarded brunch and lunch menu. Their attached bakery provides a varied menu, including apple cinnamon bread, blackberry wine chocolate cake and pecan pie. They also have seasonal favorites, like eggnog cake, available throughout the year. Another Danville favorite, Frank’s Place offers traditional Italian cuisine in an upscale setting for dinner, with carry-out and reservations available.

“We’re around a half hour from the airport, a half hour from downtown Indianapolis— Danville is right in the middle of everything you need,” says Konter. Between a walkable downtown with plenty of restaurants, shopping and a growing residential community, as Konter says, “Danville is a great place to call home.”
