Darien is a small village outside of Delavan with easy access to lakeside recreation, in the heart of rural Wisconsin, around 50 miles from Kenosha and the shores of Lake Michigan. Less than 10 miles from the picturesque Geneva Lake, Darien has a quaint downtown strip surrounded by quiet residential streets home to large, private lots.

Historic architecture and large lots

With a population of roughly 1,500, many residents are employed by the variety of manufacturing companies on the west side of town. The streets of Darien are lined with bungalows, farmhouses, ranch-style homes and Victorian revivals, with some dating back to the late 1800s. Houses sit on lots ranging from half an acre to 5 acres, with dense greenery and surrounding woods providing privacy between neighbors. Surrounded by open fields and farmland, the village has room to grow, with new builds and open lots on the north side of town in the Ponds of Darien subdivision. Prices range from $140,000 to $580,000.

Hands on learning at Darien area schools and library activities

Turtle Creek Elementary School serves kindergarten through second-grade students, while Darien Elementary School serves third and fourth graders. Phoenix Middle School offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including clubs centered around snowboarding, art and debate. Each of the area’s public schools receive C-plus grades from Niche, apart from Delavan-Darien High School, which earns a B-minus. The high school has a selection of technology education courses where students can earn hands-on industry experience, including construction, engineering design, welding and auto service fundamentals. The Darien Public Library is near the center of town and hosts story times, a book club and adult computer classes.

A small local business scene in Darien

There is a small selection of local businesses in downtown Darien, including Deb’s Country Cafe, which offers brunch fare from breakfast skillets to steak and eggs. The Darien Ice Cream Shop is next door, while the Farmers Inn serves tap brews, cocktails and pub fare. Delavan is around 5 miles northeast and has a larger selection of businesses, from jewelry stores to sandwich shops. Delavan also has Walmart, ALDI and Piggly Wiggly.

Walking trails and lakeside recreation

Wildwood Park is home to picnic pavilions, shaded walking trails and a sledding hill. West Park has baseball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, a playground and horseshoe pits. Geneva Lake is a short drive southeast and is lined with waterfront parks and recreation areas. Fontana-On-Geneva Lake has a public sand beach, a boat launch and a marina. Nearby, the Big Foot Country Club has a verdant, evergreen-dotted golf course, tennis facilities and a dining room.

Driving to nearby cities

Interstate 43 runs just north of Darien and can take drivers around 60 miles northeast to downtown Milwaukee. Kenosha is roughly 50 miles east, while Chicago is about 95 miles southwest. For long distance travel, the Chicago Rockford International Airport is around 45 miles southwest.
