New opportunities wait in Darrow
Miles of open fields and a growing master-planned community fill the Darrow neighborhood. The Mississippi River runs along the southern side of the area, where cargo boats sail along the water and locals fish. The community center offers the only hang-out spot in the area, but popular shopping and dining destinations are just 5 to 10 miles away in Gonzales. Across the river, Donaldsonville has schools, local restaurants and a park for locals to gather and enjoy. Darrow gives residents a quiet retreat from busy life and easy access to nearby amenities, all 30 miles south of Baton Rouge. Matthew Rogillio, an experienced real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty First Choice, says, “People move to Darrow for the price points, schools and nearby shopping.”
Spanish revival-inspired homes in growing Riverton
Small clusters of older manufactured and ranch homes sit close to the river. Further inland, future homeowners can find Spanish revival-inspired homes with three bedrooms and attached garages. “There’s only one new housing development in Darrow,” says Rogillio. Homes in the Ascension Trace community have been standing since the early 2000s, but new units continue to pop up in the Riverton master-planned community. Most homes feature hipped roofs, brick siding and large yards. The price for a home in the Darrow neighborhood can range between $250,000 and $480,000. Residents get big city amenities such as access to the river, shopping destinations in Gonzales and popular schools without big crowds.

Highway driving from the river to the city
Homeowners in the Riverton community walk along the paved sidewalk to see the ponds and get in their steps. Those outside Riverton walk next to the narrow streets to say hello to their neighbors. Louisiana Highway 22 runs through the neighborhood and guides drivers right to Interstate 10 when they want to commute into Baton Rouge 30 miles away.

Located along the Mississippi River and considered part of the Baton Rouge greater metropolitan area, Geismar is a thriving community that blends elements of Louisiana history into its current charm. For those looking to spread out a bit—while remaining near urban areas—Geismar allows for that and much more. “It’s a very convenient area in that you’re close to Baton Rouge, and even New Orleans,” says Cheryl Leatherwood, real estate agent with Re/Max and longtime resident of the area. “It’s quiet and is a sort of ‘midpoint’ to Baton Rouge, so it’s great for commuters.” With a blend of historic charm, well-regarded school system, and largescale job availability thanks to its proximity to the nearby plants and bigger cities, Geismar may be the right choice for those looking to have the best of both worlds.
Contemporary and classic Louisiana styles
Blending its past with its present and future, a walk down a street in Geismar may evoke the sense of being transported back in time—with traditional French Country and Acadian style homes still being very present in the area. Many of these homes have been meticulously maintained to remain as they were, while others feature modern updates. In addition to these classic styles, homebuyers can expect to see many contemporary custom and cottage styles too. Prices for three/four-bedroom homes in the area typically range from $250,000 to $600,000. Thanks to the more suburban nature of the area, homebuyers can expect large lots with attached garages and large yards.
Sought after schools in Geismar
Students in the Ascension Parish area overall have an abundance of excellent school options, but the schools located in Geismar are of particular note. “The whole area is well known for its schools, but Dutchtown schools in particular are great,” says Leatherwood. “It’s not uncommon for families to move here for the schools alone.” Students start their learning at Dutchtown Primary, before moving to Dutchtown Middle and eventually finishing at Dutchtown High School. True to the buzz about the area, each of these schools received a rating of “A” according to Niche. Dutchtown High’s marching band recently won the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands in 2023, and the football program is known for producing 6 future NFL starters since 2009.
Hit a homerun at Jackie Wilson Memorial Park
Residents looking to appreciate some greenery or maybe shoot some hoops will find just what they’re looking for at Geismar’s Jackie Wilson Memorial Park. The park features a baseball field where appreciators of the park’s namesake can watch local tournaments, as well as concession stands. Basketball courts and a picnic area round out the park’s offerings, making it a pleasant way to spend the day for community members.
Geismar has nearby necessities
While it may be true that Geismar is a quieter area than some of its larger neighbors, it’s by no means devoid of options. “It’s a quiet little area, so you might have to drive to some places,” says Leatherwood. “But never very far—and you can find plenty to eat nearby.” Local favorites such as John Michael’s Good Eats serve classic comfort food (done all in-house) in a cozy restaurant-bar setting. Dutchtown Crossing serves as the community’s shopping center, featuring a variety of other local and chain options for days when driving into Baton Rouge isn’t on the agenda.
A convenient commute to Baton Rouge
Those looking for a bit of urban adventuring (or trying to get to the LSU game) can do so easily thanks to Geismar’s proximity to Baton Rouge. At just over 20 miles from Geismar, the thriving college town is a quick hop on the interstate away. Those looking for even more adventure can find it in New Orleans at just over 60 miles away.
The Heart of Louisiana’s Chemical Corridor
Thanks to its proximity to several nearby plants, the area of Louisiana that Geismar finds itself in is known as the “chemical corridor.” Due to this, the area is well-known for its job availability—but also for potential concerns regarding the environment and air quality. Companies such as Shell have made efforts to improve environmental conditions in the area while maintaining their role as an economic engine for the area.
