Redgate Corner/South Dartmouth
Suburban Neighborhood in Dartmouth, Massachusetts
Bristol County 02748

Out and about at Jones Beach
The west side of the neighborhood, which abuts Apponagansett Bay, is a well-known hotspot for fishing and sailing, and uninhabited Little Island off the western coast is a favorite of local hikers and nature lovers, though getting there does require a boat. For those who want to just relax on the sand, Jones Beach is a neighborhood favorite. Situated on the east side of the South Dartmouth peninsula, Jones Beach is about a mile from the neighborhood. Offering visitors access to a playground, horseshoe pit and picnic tables, the adjacent Jones Beach Park turns a trip to the beach into an all-encompassing day outside. Inside the neighborhood, Dartmouth Community Park features picnic tables, a playground and plenty of open space for play or relaxation.Seafood is on the menu in South Dartmouth
On the neighborhood’s southern edge is the waterfront Farm & Coast Market, which bills itself as “a homey kitchen, family room and clubhouse – all rolled into one.” A popular local hangout, Farm & Coast Market serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in their café, with a menu featuring fresh local seafood, salads, sandwiches and pizza. Diners will also find an extensive smoothie bar, a market with a butcher shop, prepared food, beer and wine, and fresh-baked bread. For those looking to get out on the water, they can even book a cabin cruiser through No Contingencies Charter Services. Across the street from Farm & Coast Market is another local favorite, Black Bass Grille. Specializing in locally sourced seafood and ingredients, a meal at “The Bass” comes complete with a spectacular view of the bay. Despite all the other amenities that Redgate Corner/South Dartmouth affords its residents, the neighborhood is not what would be called a shopper’s paradise. When residents need groceries, home necessities or other retail needs, they do have to drive to Dartmouth Mall, approximately 5 miles to the north. The mall includes stores like Kohl’s, Best Buy and Home Depot, and both Target and Shaw’s are nearby for home necessities and groceries. Additionally, the shops and other amenities of New Bedford are less than 5 miles away.
Cape Cods and ranch-style homes
Homes in the neighborhood line narrow streets lined with mature trees, which lends a sense of seclusion to Redgate Corner/South Dartmouth. Building styles run the gamut from traditional New England shingled Cape Cods to ranch-styles with colorful siding to brick Colonial Revivals. Smaller homes can cost between $375,000 and $500,000, but most homes range from $550,000 to $700,000. Prices typically increase with additional space and proximity to the bay, and well-preserved homes built in the early 1900s also tend to cost more. The area's most expensive homes can range from $800,000 to $1.5 million.
Dartmouth public schools
Redgate Corner/South Dartmouth is districted to Dartmouth Public Schools, which earns an overall grade of B-plus from Niche. Students here can attend Joseph DeMello Elementary, Dartmouth Middle and Dartmouth High School. DeMello earns a B from Niche, Dartmouth Middle earns an A-minus and Dartmouth High earns a B-plus. “Dartmouth High School is a big draw for people moving to the neighborhood because it’s such a good school,” says Wickes. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, students at Dartmouth High School have the opportunity to play 27 different varsity-level sports and the school has a very active fine arts program. Alternatively, parents can avail themselves of some of the nation’s best private schools, including nearby Tabor Academy, which earns an A-plus from Niche.
St. Mary's hosts the Dartmouth Farmers Market
Owing in part to the abundance of area residents of Portuguese descent, there is a well-established Catholic population in the neighborhood, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church is both a place of worship and a community gathering spot. In the shade of the tall white steeple, the Dartmouth Farmers Market is open to everyone on Fridays, noon – 5:00 p.m., from early June until late October. That market features locally grown produce, meats and flowers, and supplements those offerings every first Friday of the month with the addition of an Arts & Crafts Market that showcases the works of local artisans, soap makers and more.
A ferry ride away from Nantucket
Those seeking an island vacation can jump on a ferry to either Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket – for a day trip or an extended visit – from New Bedford. There are several SRTA bus stops on Dartmouth Street, but most residents drive. The neighborhood also provides easy access to both Route 6 and Interstate 195, so residents can get virtually anywhere in New England with relative ease. “It’s easy to drive to Boston, Providence or Newport,” says local Realtor Kam Goldstone. Boston is about 60 miles away, while Providence and Newport in Rhode Island are both roughly 35 miles away. Boston Logan International Airport is 62 miles away. Medical care is available at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.
