City parks and the Putnam Museum are notable neighbors in Riverview Terrace
The historic district of Riverview Terrace overlooks the Mississippi River in Davenport. Century-old homes sit against a backdrop of tidy lawns, quiet, narrow streets and mature hardwood trees that show off their red, orange and gold leaves each fall, normally peaking in early October. As one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Riverview Terrace features turn-of-the-20th-century home styles, from Georgian Colonial Revival mansions to less-ornate two-bedroom worker’s cottages.
Homes in this neighborhood illustrate urban-residential settings from the early 1900s, some of which are immediately adjacent to centrally located Riverview Terrace Park. Homes are interspersed with local bars, restaurants, service stations and other small businesses. Less than 2 miles away are such regional attractions as Putnam Museum and Science Center and Centennial Park on the shores of the Mississippi.
“There’s an interesting mix of people who live in Riverview Terrace. I’ve met folks who have lived here for two generations and wouldn’t think of moving. This is home,” says Jeff Dellitt, Realtor with Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors.
From mansions to modest cottages
Large American Foursquare homes, with their raised main entries and contoured front yards, create an aesthetic preserved from the city's past. Craftsman-style homes and cottages painted in neutral colors add to the early 1900s feel, along with larger historic mansions, displaying multilevel columned terraces, balconies, curved bay windows and spacious yards.
Most properties list for $70,000 to $250,000. Two-story worker’s cottages needing renovation have recently sold for about $20,000 to $80,000. American Foursquare homes have recently sold for $90,000 to $192,000, and the larger, more stately homes occupy the highest end of the range.
"I’ve also sold homes to newcomers to Davenport, and when they’re city fans, they can’t get over the prices here,'' Dellitt says. "They discover homes close to the river and see the architectural variety here. Then, they get really excited about finding ‘their’ home.”
Lavish homes with two-story balconies can be found in the neighborhood.
Craftsmans can be found near minimal traditional homes.
Neoclassical homes can be found in Riverside Terrace.
