Cape Cods stretch across Cornell Heights
Cornell Heights was mostly built in the 1930s and '40s, with Cape Cod being the most prevalent architectural style. But there are also plenty of ranch-style homes, bungalows and American Foursquares. Houses sit along leafy streets shaded by large-bowed trees. Very few houses have garages, so residents park on short driveways to the side of homes. While most homes are well-kept, a few need renovation. Properties typically sell for between $45,000 and $175,000, with the average home value settling around $90,000, over $100,000 less than the Dayton Metro Area. “Affordable housing is one of the great things about our neighborhood,” Sharif says. More expensive homes come with higher square footage and recent renovations.Fishing, hiking and more in the Five Rivers parks system
Cornell Heights is home to Wesleyan MetroPark, part of the Five Rivers MetroParks system. Along the banks of Wolf Creek, the 62-acre park welcomes visitors to bike and hike the woodland trails, fish along the creek and play at the playground. The park hosts free monthly special events, from introductory classes in outdoor activities, like paddlesports and fly fishing, to group kayaking and hiking excursions. The park also boasts Adventure Central, a youth education center that provides after-school programs and summer day camps. Miami Valley Golf Club is a couple of miles north, and Dayton Northwest Recreation Center is just over a half mile east. The rec center’s major feature is its Olympic-sized pool and aquatics classes for all ages.Career pathways at Meadowdale High
Ohio offers students Universal School Choice, allowing families greater control over where children receive their education, but acceptance to schools and programs is subject to availability and other criteria. Cornell Heights students are zoned for Dayton Public School District. They may attend Valerie Elementary School, Edwin Joel Brown Middle School and Meadowdale High School. All three schools receive a C-minus grade from Niche. Valerie Elementary offers a gifted program and hosts donation drives for its MLK Day of Service program. Meadowdale High is also known as the Meadowdale Career Technology Center because it provides specialized career pathways in digital design, engineering, surgical technology and more.Cookouts and community connection in Cornell Heights
The neighborhood association hosts regular community events, from neighborhood cleanups to an annual Feast for Neighbors. These allow neighbors to create closer connections and cultivate group efforts to keep the neighborhood in order. The association also informs residents of nearby events, like The Northwest Recreation Center’s annual Back-to-School Bash and Wesleyan MetroPark’s free programming, as well as events downtown. “Being close to downtown, we can participate in all the activities there - festivals, arts venues, free concerts at the Levitt Pavilion, movies at The Neon, the Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Museum of Natural History,” Sharif says.Only 3 miles from Downtown Dayton
Riverview Avenue and Cornell Drive are the primary thoroughfares for Cornell Heights. They connect to Salem Avenue, a straight shot over the Miami River into Downtown Dayton 3 miles southwest. Bus stops are also throughout the neighborhood, within walking distance of homes. Interstate 75 runs north and south through Dayton, taking travelers to Cincinnati, about 60 miles away. Interstate 70 is 3 miles north of Cornell Heights and goes eastward to Columbus, a 70-mile trip. For long-distance travel, Dayton International Airport is 9 miles away.Shopping and dining along Salem and North Gettysburg avenues
The neighborhood is primarily residential, but Cornell Meat King Supermarket is directly north, serving everyday needs. One mile north, Save A Lot is also an option for groceries. The closest restaurants are along Salem Avenue, 1 mile north, and North Gettysburg Avenue, 2 miles southwest. Along Salem, JJ Fish & Chicken serves comfort food combos, while Happy’s Pizza is a locally known chain. Dragon China and Walgreens are on North Gettysburg Avenue. Rainbow Shops and Dollar General are also along North Gettysburg. More dining and shopping options are available in Downtown Dayton.
