Dayton's oldest neighborhood
Initially founded in 1829, Oregon stands out as Dayton’s oldest neighborhood. But with its vibrant population, active shopping districts and rejuvenated historic homes, this community stays relevant and popular even two centuries later. “It’s a very trendy area,” says Mike Meyer, a Realtor with Irongate Realtors who has served the area for over 27 years. This sense of hipness, however, hasn’t stopped a wide variety of people from calling Oregon home. Proximity to downtown Dayton has made it popular with young professionals and active pedestrians. At the same time, the classic architecture appeals to the older soul who appreciates a more established neighborhood, free of the cookie-cutter homes of the modern age.

Restored classic architecture
A walk through Oregon is like a walk through a piece of Dayton’s history. Mature trees provide shade for red brick streets and well-maintained sidewalks. Intricate wrought-iron fences enclose modest gardens and manicured sitting areas. Though more recent construction exists, most of the area’s homes were built around the turn of the 20th century, a fact prospective homeowners should keep in mind. “They’re older lots, and you need to be prepared for that,” says Ben Biedenharn, a born-and-raised Daytonian who works as an office manager with Home Experts Realty. “If you’re looking for a yard, that’s going to be tough.” Keeping with its age, Oregon’s homes tend toward Classical and Victorian styles, with remodeled Stick style homes starting in the mid-$100,000s and brick townhomes going in the low $400,000s. Vast, extensively remodeled Italianate estates can reach into the high-$800,000s.

Modern Italian at Roost
East Fifth Street follows Oregon’s southern border and represents some of the best shopping in the area. “They’ve got everything on Fifth Street,” says Biedenharn. “Mom and pop stores, restaurants — and like the rest of the neighborhood, it’s really walkable.” A trip to the Kroger in neighboring Twin Towers keeps the pantry stocked.
For fine dining, locals visit Roost, a modern Italian restaurant with an elegant atmosphere and a rotating, seasonal menu. Lucky’s Taproom provides a more casual barroom experience with beer, burgers and the occasional game of pinball.

Important to know
Oregon experiences its fair share of noise pollution as part of downtown Dayton. “It can be pretty noisy in this area,” says Biedenharn. For those of us who live here, it’s just white noise, but people moving to the area should know that.”
The CAP Index lists Oregon as an 6 out of 10, putting the crime rate above the national average of 4. However, locals see this as part and parcel of living in a busy city. “Living downtown means there’s more crime, but it’s still safer than most larger cities,” says Biedenharn.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
