How Oregon became Dayton’s historic jewel and favorite retail hub
Oregon may be one of Dayton's oldest neighborhoods, but a popular commercial corridor keeps this community relevant — even after 100 years. The area is known for its beautifully preserved historic homes, which follow tree-lined streets. Fifth Street is a hub for dining, nightlife and boutique shopping, often buzzing with activity during the weekends and evenings. Seasonal events, like Out on 5th, make the retail district even more lively, attracting visitors and traffic to the neighborhood. But residents don't seem to mind, since they live within walking distance of all the fun.

Explore preserved historic homes with character and modern renovations
Most of the neighborhood's homes date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "If you're a historic buyer, I would definitely put the Oregon district at the top of the list because there's a lot of preservation, and they have a very strong historical society," says David Moyer, Realtor with Keller Williams Advisors Realty. Strict regulations on exterior and interior renovations help preserve the area's historic value and unique visual character. Residents take great pride in maintaining the neighborhood's colorful architecture, which includes Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Victorian styles.
Oregon's homes have distinctly small lots. "If you're looking for a yard, that's going to be tough," says Bob Biedenharn , Realtor with Home Experts Realty.
Keeping with the neighborhood's age, homes lean toward Classical and Victorian styles.
Yards are small, since original lots were rarely expanded.

What buyers are paying to live in the historic district
Renter-occupancy is high, especially around the commercial district, where industrial warehouses have been converted into loft-style apartments. It's also common for single-family and multifamily homes to be rentals. However, owner occupancy has increased in the historic district. This is partly due to the area's preservation needs and home prices, which are relatively more expensive than those in surrounding neighborhoods, like South Park and Historic Inner East. Prices start around the $200,000s and end in the mid-$400,000s, although some homes can reach the $600,000s.
Fifth Street is the heart of Oregon's commercial success
"If you ask anyone about the Oregon district, what they think of is Fifth Street," Moyer says. "That's where you have some of the finer dining in Dayton and your nightlife. It's reminiscent of a Midwest Bourbon Street." Fifth Street is also a shopping hub, offering everything from mom and pop stores to art galleries and antique shops. Weekends and evenings are some of the busiest times at the corridor, as people dart in and out of spots like:
Salar Restaurant and Lounge, an upscale venue serving Peruvian and European-inspired fare
Lucky's Taproom & Eatery, a laid-back bar serving craft beers, burgers and vegan options
Thai 9, a cozy Thai restaurant that also has Japanese and Chinese dishes
Dublin Pub, a traditional Irish brewpub offering a hearty menu and live music
Oregon also has a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, allowing people to walk around with drinks from participating pubs and bars while exploring other businesses.
Locals and visitors love to shop at the unique small businesses along Fifth Street.
Lucky's is a full-service bar and restaurant with weekly homemade specials.
Sit outside with friends and enjoy the night air.

People walk, whether the streets are busy or not
Oregon is very pedestrian-friendly. You can easily walk between businesses along Fifth Street or take a stroll around the neighborhood's tree-lined historic district. Driving can be tough, as weekend traffic and street closures often cause congestion. "It can be pretty noisy in this area," Biedenharn says. "For those of us who live here, it's just white noise, but people moving to the area should know that." Street parking can also be a hassle, even for residents, but there are many surface lots and metered parking spots around the retail district. City bus stops along Fifth Street also help people get around without a car.
Explore weekend events and the annual Halloween bash
The neighborhood is a hub for seasonal events. Each weekend in spring and summer, street traffic is blocked along Fifth Street so pedestrians can enjoy expanded outdoor dining, shopping and live entertainment. "People can eat outside and walk up and down the street without having to be on the sidewalk," Moyer says. The neighborhood also has a signature event: Hauntfest, the city's largest Halloween party. Every year, this 21-plus event brings music, street performers and food trucks to the neighborhood.
