As one of Dayton’s first suburbs, Walnut Hills stands out with historic architecture and civic pride not easily found in other neighborhoods. Gentle hills place the community on an elevation just above the surrounding area, providing panoramic views into the city in some areas. Lovingly maintained homes, churches and green spaces follow calm, tree-lined streets that give no hints as to the busy city center just 3 miles northwest. This well-crafted level of peace and quiet has attracted residents of every stripe—some brought together only by their shared interest in their thriving community. “There’s an eclectic style to both the houses and the people,” says Mike Schommer, the Walnut Hills Neighborhood Association president. “It’s a neighborhood where anyone can be comfortable.”

Restored centennial Foursquares
Despite its historic reputation, the vast majority of the homes in Walnut Hills don’t show their age, a fact made all the more impressive considering the average building date in the neighborhood hovers around the mid-1910s. Steady renovations have left homes as testimonials to the power of fresh wood and a new coat of paint. Sidewalks follow the street grid, making the area popular for dog walkers and joggers. Modest front and backyards are the norm, though driveways and garages are not, necessitating street parking at most homes. American Foursquares are the dominant style, but bungalows, ranch and Craftsman-style are also popular. Despite the variety of styles, homes are uniformly spaced and arranged, making the area look neat and well-planned. Ranch-style houses start in the high-$90,000s, while a renovated Foursquare can reach the mid-$100,000s. Historic Craftsman homes begin in the low-$200,000s.

Get the zoomies at Highland Dog Park
Surrounded by thickets of large, shady trees, Walnut Hills Park is a 7-acre green space with playground equipment, a basketball court, an enclosed soccer field and a splash pad for the summer. The nearby Highland Dog Park has over half an acre of fenced-in space for the family’s resident good boy to romp and play with other dogs without the restriction of a leash. Walnut Hills is bordered to the west by the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum’s 200 acres of rolling hills and native trees ideal for memorial, rest or quiet contemplation.

Honky tonk at Lov's Whiskey Barrel
While the familiar sights of Kroger, Walgreens and Wendy’s dot the streets, Walnut Hills takes pride in its local businesses and restaurants. Twist Indian Grill offers a speedy, modern take on Indian cuisine with options like naan tacos. Lov’s Whiskey Barrel Saloon has steak dinners, live music and a full bar set out in a western honky tonk atmosphere. Esther Price has been serving gourmet chocolate, fudge and brittle in Walnut Hills since its founding in the 1920s, and it remains a local favorite to this day.

The Walnut Hills Neighborhood Association is an active part of the local community, and events like the annual Chili Cookoff, family cultural dinners and Halloween trunk-or-treat are regular features of the weekly scene. With downtown Dayton less than 3 miles away, locals are also in an ideal location for access to the performances, conventions and celebrations the busy metro area attracts.
Dual enrollment at Belmont High School
Ohio’s Open Enrollment policy allows parents to choose the right public school for their children, regardless of district. Students can begin at Eastmont Elementary, which has a C on Niche, before enrolling at Belmont High School, which scores a C-plus. “Belmont High School has had some great success lately with their graduation rate,” says Schommer. “And their dual enrollment program has led to students graduating high school with an associate degree.” For those interested in continuing their education, the University of Dayton’s main campus can be found 1 mile west in neighboring South Park.
Belmont High School has an overall rating of C+, according to Niche.

Downtown is just a bike ride away
Nearby U.S. Route 35 makes for convenient commutes into downtown Dayton, though some prefer a less motorized path. “You’re in biking distance to downtown,” says Schommer. “And you’re in walking distance to the University of Dayton. It’s a great location.” Public transportation through Dayton’s RTA bus line provides access to the greater Dayton area.
