Suburban convenience in De Witt
De Witt blends suburban comfort with a small-town ambiance about 6 miles east of Syracuse. “De Witt has a much-desired school district, proximity to major highways, and there’s a Wegmans for shopping, which is very convenient,” says Edward Glassberg, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties, who has sold homes in the area since 1985. Like much of upstate New York, the region is known for its heavy snowfall, with a yearly average of nearly 114 inches. However, surrounding state parks, trails along the Erie Canal and glistening, swimmable lakes in the summer make the harsh winters bearable. Within minutes of all Syracuse offers, De Witt features quaint homes on quiet streets with easy access to the great outdoors.
Colonials and Cape Cods in an upstate New York suburb
Most residential streets are west of Erie Boulevard, with quiet roads that feature a range of architectural styles. Colonials sit next to Cape Cods, split-levels, and ranch-style homes that display classic northeastern features like clapboard siding in various colors. Prices can range from the mid $100,000s for a home that needs some TLC to $450,000 for an updated house. “Sections of the town of De Witt were built in the 1920s and 1930s, then new developments were made to expand the town in the 60s and 70s,” Glassberg says. “There are still new builds near the Jamesville-Dewitt School District, but there’s only so much room to grow there now.” Nearly every property has a fenced-in backyard and driveway, while only some feature an attached garage, and others offer detached garages. Due to surrounding streams, areas around Interstate 481 are prone to flooding. Additionally, residents have been impacted by smokey air from Canadian wildfires in recent years.
Small ranch style and Cape Cod homes are common in some areas of DeWitt.
Many homes in DeWitt are secluded in wooded areas, and some residents even grow ivy on them.

De Witt is also home to Le Moyne College, a private Jesuit institution, and Syracuse University, a well-known, private research university, is about 6 miles down the road.

Walks along the Erie Canalway Trail
Ryder Park is the community’s central gathering place next to the Town Hall. Amenities include a children’s playground, picnic pavilions and a walking trail that loops around a small pond. Further south along Butternut Drive, hikers and bikers can hit the Erie Canalway Trail, which leads approximately 10 miles east to Chittenango, and offers scenic waterside views. Locals can also head east to Downtown Syracuse along the Empire State Trail. About 5 miles away, Clark Reservation State Park has even more meandering trails and picturesque landscapes. In the summer, the Lyndon Golf Course offers a different kind of green, and in the winter, the slopes are packed at the Four Seasons Golf & Ski Center. Although the Great Lakes are just a road trip away, DeWitt residents are surrounded by many smaller swimmable lakes, like the guarded Jamesville Beach Park and Green Lake. The Jewish Community Center of Syracuse is also in the heart of town, providing members with a fitness center, outdoor pool, clubs, childcare and summer camp.

Canal Day at Ryder Park
Ryder Park hosts various community events, like the De Witt Concert series, where locals can enjoy free outdoor concerts every Wednesday. Locals can also pick up fresh produce beforehand at the seasonal farmers market, notes Patty Sawmiller, who works at De Witt’s Parks and Recreation Department. Other activities include face painting, cornhole tournaments and live music. Apart from delicious food trucks, there are beer tastings from local breweries and fireworks to end the night.

Shopping and dining along Erie Boulevard
U.S. Route 5, also known as Erie Boulevard East, is the main commercial corridor in town. Big-box stores here include Marshalls & HomeGoods, Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Home Depot and more. Across the street, locals can grab groceries at Trader Joe’s. Wegmans, Aldi and Target are also nearby in neighboring Fayetteville. Pizza joints like Mario & Salvo’s serve up hot Neapolitan and Sicilian pies. Delmonico’s Syracuse is a well-known Italian steakhouse known for its sizzling prime cuts, and down the road, Red Chili Restaurant is one of the top-rated Chinese eateries around. Tully’s Good Times is a popular sports bar chain with a lively ambiance. Plans are in the works to turn the former ShoppingTown Mall into a mixed-used development called District East. The latter will feature a blend of residential units, retailers, parks and walking paths.

Interstate 690 to Downtown Syracuse
De Witt is a car-dependent community. However, numerous Centro bus stops are scattered around town and throughout Le Moyne College for public access to the greater Syracuse metropolitan area. Main roads like Erie Boulevard are essential thoroughfares connecting residents to nearby amenities. Commuters can head about 6 miles to downtown Syracuse on Interstates 481 or 690. Interstate 690 merges with I-81, which leads to Syracuse Hancock International Airport, about 10 miles away. Three miles west, a range of specialists are available at NorthEast Medical Center, while Crouse Hospital and Syracuse VA Medical Center are about 5 miles east.
