A culturally rich, suburban community
Fordson is a small, culturally rich community named after Fordson High School. "A lot of the people from the Arab American community moved into today's area, which became predominantly Middle Eastern," says Dave Abdallah, owner of Century 21 Curran & Oberski and longtime Dearborn resident. "They started opening a lot of restaurants, a lot of shops, Mosques, churches, et cetera, and then it just became more vibrant." Over time, Fordson and surrounding neighborhoods became ethnic enclaves. Like other neighborhoods in east Dearborn, many residents are immigrants who started their journeys in the South End. As they earned more money and became accustomed to living in the US, many migrated north of Interstate 95 to experience a more suburban lifestyle. "It's considered an upgrade from South End," says Abdallah, "It's an upgrade in terms of the infrastructure, and it's a little bit more assimilation to the American lifestyle." Abdallah speaks from experience - his family migrated to the US when he was 11, and they moved to east Dearborn when he was a young teen, following a similar path as his neighbors. The neighborhood continues to draw in residents with its strong cultural identity, vicinity to dining and quality schools.

Major shopping districts in every direction
Shopping and dining sprawls in every direction. Warren Avenue borders Fordson to the north, lined with longstanding city staples such as Shatila Bakery and New Yasmeen Bakery, specializing in Middle Eastern baked goods and desserts. It’s also home to Papaya Fruit Market, a supermarket that specializes in halal meat options and Middle Eastern ingredients. Schaefer borders it to the east and features even more locally owned establishments, including Qahwah House. Offering Yemeni coffee, tea and pastries, this popular coffee shop is one of the most well-regarded in the city. While the chain's original location is in Fordson, it has expanded since its inception in 2017 and now operates about 20 locations around the country. "The place isn't big, it's a good seven, eight thousand square feet, but it's packed with people socializing,” Abdallah says. "There are social settings in the evening, but because [Muslim people] don't drink alcohol or smoke hookah, you have to have an alternative to something to drink, and that's why it tends to be coffee and tea."Greenfield, a half mile west, features various stores and restaurants, from Hookah shops to pizza parlors. Ford Road borders Fordson to the south and houses larger, big-box retailers, including Best Buy and Walmart.

1930s bungalows and modern houses
Modern traditional homes and 1930s bungalows line the streets of Fordson. With a median lot size of about 4,400 square feet, houses are only separated by long, paved driveways. They also feature small front and backyards. "These closer houses, in terms of lot sizes, do work in a positive way because people have a lot more interaction with each other," Abdallah says. "I'll know your family, and you'll know mine, so it's just a little a little bit more tightknit." While the neighborhood is mostly quiet, a set of train tracks cuts it in half and can cause noise throughout the day. Due to older infrastructure, mild street flooding is also an issue. Homes hardly hit the market, but when they do, they generally sell between $220,000 and $350,000.
