Southwestern Outer Drive
Well-kept cottages and Tudor-style homes
A stunning array of architectural fabric cloaks the cozy tree-covered Southwest Outer Drive neighborhood of Dearborn, Michigan. Homes reflecting the neighborhood’s rich heritage range in style from colonial revival to elegant Tudor designs and brick cottages. The price range of these homes makes them even more attractive, says Ali Farhat, a Realtor with RE/MAX in Dearborn. “It’s one of the lowest you’re going to find in the area,” says Farhat. According to him, that price range sits comfortably between $120,000 and $465,000, for the most part. The median home price is $225,000, in line with the previous year.Edsel Ford’s nature preserve
Farhat cited the highly regarded schools in the neighborhood as another major draw to the area. According to Niche rankings, Nowlin Elementary School is a pillar of academic excellence, earning the school an overall grade of B. For middle school students, Smith Middle School provides a nurturing environment that fosters personal and academic growth and earns a B-minus. With consistently high praise for its rigorous curriculum, Edsel Ford High School features a “nature preserve” and encourages students to become stewards of the natural world. Edsel Ford earns a B-minus.Penn-Vassar, Oxford and Whitmore-Bolles Parks
For nature enthusiasts and families seeking outdoor solace in the neighborhood, Penn-Vassar Park holds multiple playgrounds, open green space and a paved walking path around its perimeter. Oxford Park is a popular spot for friendly basketball games. Whitmore-Bolles has a popular splash pad, picnic tables and a playground with slides.Black Box Coffee and an abundance of shopping
Residents of the Southwest Outer Drive neighborhood often drop by Black Box Coffee Shop and Art to discuss art over a hot cup of Joe. The shop promotes and showcases premium coffee and the work of local and national artists. For lunch or dinner, Unburger offers vegan burgers and fries on Michigan Avenue. While Daily Fresh Supermarket serves as the neighborhood grocery store, selling carefully curated and imported items to suit the community's needs, other grocery stores like Kroger and Meijer are nearby. Residents also like to venture to the Dearborn Summer Market, held from June through September at Wagner Park in downtown Dearborn, to stock up on fresh ingredients or pick up a unique gift for a friend.
Also nearby is the Fairlane Town Center. This indoor mall has over 100 stores and restaurants, making it a one-stop shop for all your retail and dining needs. Some of the most popular stores in the mall include Macy's, J.C. Penney, and H&M, as well as a variety of specialty stores selling everything from jewelry to electronics.
Telegraph Road and Michigan Avenue
Residents who like to leave their cars at home have miles of sidewalks to enjoy and access to the Detroit public transit system via bus stops along Telegraph Road. Drivers can take Telegraph Road to Michigan Avenue, which puts downtown Dearborn roughly 5 miles away and downtown Detroit about 15 miles away. Less than a mile south, drivers can access Interstate 94, connecting them to Western Michigan and the Chicago metro area.Dearborn Homecoming
Clark-Foos, a full-time mom in addition to her music instructor business, cites Dearborn Homecoming as one of the area’s best events for families. “There’s a beautiful hill where everyone gathers to enjoy the music. They bring in a fair and local food trucks, and it’s three nights of major fireworks. It’s something we always go to.” Clark-Foos says Dearborn also holds a restaurant month, during which local restaurants organize specials to attract people to Dearborn’s dining scene.
