Variety of home styles in this agricultural town
Realtor Sydney Mooney of North West Arkansas Homes says, “Decatur is moments from Bentonville, Interstate 149, and all things Northwest Arkansas, and it’s also close to plenty of outdoor opportunities.” Decatur has a long history dating back to Arkansas’ early statehood; the first settler established a farm in the area in 1833, and his 40-acre farm was recognized by the government in 1854. This farm grew into the community of Corner Spring, eventually renamed to Decatur to honor one of America’s earliest naval heroes, Stephen Decatur. Decatur’s strawberry and peach farming industries, along with the arrival of the railroad, transformed Decatur into a boomtown of the early 20th century, and, while the Great Depression reversed this meteoric rise, Decatur has since recovered due to its poultry industry. Decatur is now home to just under 1,800 people, with its vibrant poultry industry attracting both local Arkansans and immigrants to take part in this town’s strong heritage of farming. Decatur’s homes reflect this town’s rural and agricultural character, with almost every home being built in the ranch style; newer townhouses add variety to the housing market’s makeup. Mooney says, “Some homes have incredible views of gorgeous pasture lands.” Houses in Decatur tend to sell for between $200,000 and $600,000, with most homes skewing towards the lower end.
Ranch homes are common in Decatur.
Decatur also lies along highway 102, which runs to Centerton and Bentonville.

The Ozarks and Crystal Lake highlight the area's recreation
Decatur’s location among the picturesque Ozarks contributes to the appeal of its parks and natural areas. Within this city, locals can visit Edmiston Park to play baseball or the neighboring Veterans Park to pace its paved walking paths, make use of the park’s large soccer field, or – if they are enjoying a family outing – bring their kids to the playground. Another popular feature is Crystal Lake, a 59-acre lake popular for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and lakeview lunches from local picnic tables.

Decatur Meat Market and popular local restaurants
As a small town, Decatur does not have its own traditional supermarket, but a Harps Food Store is located just 6 miles down Highway 59 in neighboring Gentry. A Dollar General at the heart of town provides residents with everyday necessities. In addition, Decatur is home to local food markets expressing this town’s unique combination of cultures. Carniceria Guanajuato, formerly known as the Decatur Meat Market & Produce, sells freshly packaged meats such as chicken and beef as well as Mexican goods from tamales to guacamole. Just down Main Street, the Simmons Chicken Store – a local fixture since 1949 – proudly bears Decatur’s heritage as a poultry farming town with its freshly chicken products, from chicken legs to nuggets and wings. For farm-to-table goods like honey, pumpkins, and apples, locals also frequent the Dairy Barn Market along Route 102.
