Wide beaches, coastal breezes, crimson bluffs and brilliant sunsets

Mother Nature smiled when she made Del Mar. Twenty-five miles north of San Diego, Del Mar is the pinnacle of coastal living. Families frolic in the waves at Powerhouse Beach. Hikers stroll beneath twisted Torrey Pines. Friends sip mai tais by the beach in The Village. And ladies don their fancy hats for the summer races at Del Mar racetrack. “I've lived here since 2002,” says Susan Nahama, an attorney with Klinedinst P.C. in San Diego, who loves that the city has retained a local vibe despite the accolades. “There’s not a lot of commercial development. There are great schools. Incredible beaches. And Torrey Pines and Powerhouse Beach are right there.”

Take the family to Powerhouse Beach

Powerhouse Beach and its neighbor Powerhouse Park are the center of the action for outdoor fun. “Between 15th and 21st it’s very family-oriented, with lifeguards, restrooms and restaurants,” says Nahama, adding that families often grab pizza at Del Mar Pizza then walk to Powerhouse Park to enjoy it on the lawn. But the action doesn't stop at 21st Street. “All the way up to 26th Street is also prime beach, and also family-oriented, but the crowds may get a little older the further north you go, with surfers and volleyball players.” Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve protects rare Torrey Pines, which soar above the coast on dramatic bluffs. “There are so many hikes in Torrey Pines,” says Nahama. “If you have a guest, you take them there. You can hike to the beach. There’s great parking. And it's near the legendary golf course.”

Mission Revival, Craftsmen and ultra-modern estates keep Del Mar ever appealing

In the city’s infancy, the predominant trend was classic Mission Revival. As tastes evolved, there was a burgeoning mix of traditional Craftsman, Mid-Century Modern and eventually a smattering of ultra-modern estates. Current inventory includes custom homes as well as a tasteful mix of newer condos and apartments, all built with a keen eye to limiting density and overcrowding. A three-bedroom ranch-style house about 1.5 miles from the beach costs $1.5 million while a contemporary oceanfront home can sell for $14 million. Condos range from $620,000 for a two-bedroom unit one mile from the beach to $3 million for a unit in the Chateau L’Auberge in the center of the city.

The Del Mar racetrack hosts the best parties

Bon vivants and horse racing fans converge for the summer race season at the world renowned Del Mar racetrack. Another top event is the San Diego County Fair, a month-long party that kicks off beside the racetrack in mid-June. The oceanfront Del Mar Village hosts a tremendous local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. In warmer months locals stroll the Village in the late afternoon during the Summer Twilight concert series, with musicians playing as the sun drops. Many associate nearby Torrey Pines with the world-renowned golf course, host of numerous PGA and LPGA national tournaments.

Savor great food and sunsets at Jake’s Del Mar and Monarch’s

The Village is the posh heart of the community. Locals and tourists alike stroll a dynamic mix of boutiques, galleries and top-notch restaurants. Public art installations add an aesthetic touch to the scene. “Along the beach on 15th, you have Jake’s Del Mar,” Nahama says. “It’s a fixture and it’s literally on the beach. It’s a little more touristy but locals will take someone to see it.” Del Mar Plaza is around the corner on Camino Del Mar. “The Plaza is a hip area with shops and restaurants, and there’s a restaurant-bar there called Monarch’s. Go at sunset.” For great Mexican, everyone heads to Tamarindo, also in the Plaza. The Von’s supermarket just west of I-5 is a top stop for groceries.

Del Mar is centrally located between northern coastal communities and San Diego

Sections of the city are pedestrian friendly but as you head away from the beach, four-wheel travel is preferred. “It’s walkable in The Village,” Nahama says. “People who live in the hills use golf carts to get around.” To get to the beach, however, most locals who live east of The Village drive. Commuters have it pretty good. “Del Mar is a great location if you have to commute,” says Nahama. “It takes about 25 to 30 minutes to get to San Diego. Del Mar is about as far north as you want to go.” On the way home, commuters usually exit before hitting the traffic jams seen further north, Nahama says. Del Mar is also a great launch pad for visiting Solana, Encinitas and other northern beach communities.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
