Rural lakeside living outside of Colombus
Delaware Lake is what makes the neighborhood of Marlboro special. Marlboro is a green township in Delaware County 35 miles north of Columbus and 85 miles south of what is known as the Vacationland waterfrontage along Lake Erie. Like many areas outside of Columbus, Delaware began in the form of land grants given to veterans of the Revolutionary War in the early 19th century. Before this, it was an essential stop on the Underground Railroad due to its borders with former slave-holding states. Today, it's a rural farming community where Columbusites can live country life under an hour away from downtown Columbus.
Farms and old colonials on acreage
Marlboro is 10 square miles of farms and parkland, with most homes sequestered in the east, where Horseshoe Road and Ohio State Route 229 converge. Stephanie Vangundy, a lifelong resident of Delaware County and realtor for over a decade, says: "People used to move up here for the price point, compared to areas closer to Columbus, but the market has increased extremely." At the top of this market, large late 20th-century colonial homes with multiple bedrooms and amenities such as horse stables or in-ground pools on several acres of land are listed under $700,000. There are also opportunities to buy historic farmsteads with farmhouses from the prewar era on up to 10 acres for under $750,000. Neat postwar ranch-style homes on rolling and forested lots up to an acre can be found for under $350,000.

Delaware State Park is for everyone
Marlboro encompasses a third of Delaware State Park, an enticing place for locals and visitors. The vast natural resource has thousands of acres of beech and maple woodlands with a 1,300 reservoir in the middle. In addition to a 200-site campground, the park offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities, from disc golf to quail hunting and bass fishing. Those who prefer to birdwatch can enjoy the Delaware Reservoir Wildlife Area, where bluebirds are plentiful. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources manages the Delaware Wildlife Area Public Shooting Range and offers several different ranges.

Buckeye Valley West Elementary School, with just over 600 students from across the county, received a B-plus. Buckeye Valley Middle School and Buckeye Valley High School both received B ratings. In addition to offering 24 varsity sports, Buckeye Valley High School operates a large college-sized football stadium, where local families and fans gather to sip from warm thermoses while watching the Barons play.

Not much in Marlboro, but Small Town USA is 7 miles south
Drivers heading north on US Route 23 will cross farmlands under a vast sky, but midway through Marlboro, travelers would be wise to pull over at Mom Wilson's Country Sausage. This old-timey food stand is what employee Patti Rogers, a lifelong resident of Delaware, calls "One of the last family businesses around here." The shop serves a cornucopia of local meat packaged in various ways and is a reminder of the country charm that's made home prices jump. Aside from a few small businesses, there's no commerce in Marlboro, but the town of Delaware is 8 miles down the road. Vangundy says Delaware is a place that draws homebuyers for "its community support, cheerful demeanor and general Hallmark card-type atmosphere. Downtown Delaware has amazing small restaurants and coffee shops, and they're all independent. The town also approved a North Market like the one in Columbus, where local food entrepreneurs can have weekly pop-ups to showcase their good for the community. That's slated to open in December of 2024."
